I have just bought a Marantz CD54 - What I want to learn how to do is run the signal through a better DAC. I am a bit of a ludite when it comes to electrics, but I am able to pick things up and get the job done. Can anyone help me with what my best options are here?
Many thanks for any help - LB

Hi.
The Marantz CD54 is a very nice machine which can benefit from some simple mods and upgrades.
Unfortunately for your purposes, it has the SAA7030 / TDA1540 chipset which means no SP/DIF and also no means of providing it !!
So without enormous digital hacking, an external DAC is not possible.
Enjoy the CDP - it is a good buy. One of the best mechanisms - the CDM1

Thanks for that - knowing it can't be done solves the problem somewhat 🙂
Are the upgrades and mods you mentioned achievable for the average man? I have the schematics for the player so would not be entirely in the dark.

Hi.
Yes, the upgrade path is easy to follow.
Remember the golden rule - change one thing at a time !!!!
One of the first things to do is change the electrolytic caps. Remember, the player is several years old. Start with the main ones in the power supply. Slightly larger size.
Then progress to add better ones (oscon) in the digital side or (blackgate/silmic/cerafine) in the analog side.
Then its on to improving the power supply with more/better transformers and more regulators.
Then clocks, better opamps and so on.
Check out the CD104 thread and this thread, Lukasz Fikus Lampizator , for ideas.
