Another update:
I just got my l-pads and zobel networks in today and I had a blast installing them in one speaker. Comparing the modified speaker to the old one, the difference is astonishing! I didn't understand at first that wiring resistors in parallel with the tweeter to reduce efficiency would also throw the crossover out of whack.
The stock woofers are not very efficient at all however. How much do you think I would benefit from going with Dayton Audio reference woofers (or something more expensive in general) instead?
Thanks

Having owned JBL HLS speakers the horn driver is weak. Anything would be an improvement. They actually sound like a padded down piezo. I currently own a pair of JBL SVA 1600s. I've been told they have a 1"Audax fabric dome. They have a pair of 6.5" woofers. JBL incorrectly says they are 5" woofers. The SVA 1800 with the 8" woofers and the SVA 2100 with 10" woofers have 1.35" titanium domes bolted to the horns. There is no comparison between SVA and HLS horn drivers. I'm not sure what drivers would be a direct fit to an HLS horn but any of them will be more efficient and probably need to be padded down. Good luck.
The following link is for a 9"x9" horn with a 1.35" titanium driver. They are under $40 for a pair and they go up to 20K. The 2.6K Xover point will work fine. If they fit in the box they will be a great improvement MCM Audio Select 1.35'' Compression Horn Tweeter - 9'' x 9'' 200W RMS | 53-1270 (531270) | MCM Audio Select
