Short story. Wife went back to college in her late 30s while working more than full time in a salaried position and finishes a degree in forensic anthropology in a couple weeks. I'm proud and wanted to get her something she'd like. I bought her a 400 year old anatomy text book as a graduation gift. I'm building a pedestal to display it on. A couple years ago I finally started building a pair of ikea wood bowl speakers with some Tang Band drivers I had had sitting around for a decade. I didn't finish. But I was just thinking, what if I did finish and the pedestal was also a subwoofer to go with them. Boom! I have a guy doing some cnc carving in the 4 side panels, but I think they're 13" wide with the carvings being like 9" wide. The panels are 36" tall but the carving is 28". Anyone wanna help design something functional within those parameters?
I was thinking something about this shape: pillar
The panels are 1" thick and I'm not talking about a 12" sub here so that should be fine. Can integrate some internal bracing to adjust shape or volume. Down firing is the only thing that would make sense to me, wife approval factor needs to be high since it's for her after all. I can confirm the exact drivers I have later if someone is interested in helping, they're buried in the garage.

okay here are some photos and such to give more details. What I have now is 4 boards, 1.75" thick and 13" x 36". I would visually like them to taper down as seen in the example pillar. I don't' want a ported sub as the pillar will have designs on all 4 sides, but it could potentially be slotted if it needs some porting. We aren't talking hifi here, just something my wife can use to listening to audio books or streaming music. Figure an 8" driver that hits mid 30hz with like 100watts in a 2.1 channel setup.
I guess the ask is, what 8" driver and little 2.1 amp works well in a ~12" x 36" box to compliment some full range 4" drivers?
12x12x36 - 1.75 thickness gives you about 1.3CF to play with, Id say step up to a 10"sub something like a
Wavecor SW270WA01 10-1/2" Balanced Drive Paper Cone Subwoofer 4 Ohm
It'll give you much more output than a 8" given the same watts, they recommend a 1cf volume sealed to give an F3 around 45Hz.
its about $170 so not the cheapest option but being Wavecor it should be a nice driver designed for good SQ over outright SPL.
A Dayton Audio RSS265HF-4 10" would be as good same 1cf needed, touch more $$, both subs have good sensitivity 88Db@ 2.83V/1m

My wife is working out of our former gym room these days, so it has rubber mats, but if that's ever not the case again the rest of the house has wood floors. I was thinking more about this, would a 4th or 6th order bandpass be a good alternative? I don't mind fitting a single slot style port into the design.

I really don't need to additional bass in this setup. I have an Outlaw Ultra x-12 for when I need to rattle the windows. Pairing with some 4" full range drivers on a 10W amp, I considered checking the thrift store for a leftover sub from a computer 2.1 system but I can do better than that.12x12x36 - 1.75 thickness gives you about 1.3CF to play with, Id say step up to a 10"sub something like a

That looks like a solid sub, not too pricey. I'm already too deep $ on this project so I'm being frugal on the remainderDayton Audio DCS205-4 would run flat down to 30Hz in a 30 liter ported box.
I'm using this one in a 30 liter slot ported box and it sounds really nice and also digs deep down almost flat to 20Hz and can take about 90W for 107db IIRC. Port length is 760mm with one fold. That looks like a solid sub, not too pricey. I'm already too deep $ on this project so I'm being frugal on the remainder
