Hi there, I'm a newly minted "I think that I want to build my own speakers" person. I have a mechanical engineering background, so the math part is not too bad for me, but I am wondering

1) where is the best place to start researching speaker building theory, and

2) what would be the best project to 'pop my cherry' on?

My main use of speakers is for movies, I live in a small apartment, so I cannot build anything too large. I am comfortable with woodworking as well.

I would suggest an established kit rather than from scratch. Cuts down on the reading and the headaches.

Decide how big and what kind of money you want to spend, take your question and parameters over to the loudspeaker section and post it. Lots of helpful persons there.

Everyone should read LSDC, but do keep in mind that it has its own very real slant on things.

There is a lot, an aweful lot, of good info on the web as well, and a number of other books including Martin Colloms' book

I'd recommend buying from someone in the industry as opposed to looking for the best price -- amazon doesn't need the money.

As to a 1st project, there are a ton of full-range single driver designs that make it easy to get your feet wet (warning: they might well spoil you for anything with an XO 🙂)
