Hi Folks,
I thought I’d say hello and apologise for asking stupid questions before I ask them!
I’ve been thinking about modifying and making things for ages but never quite got around to it, then yesterday I started making some speaker cables up that I found on the TNT Audio site. After getting to the point where I have to bare the ends of 192 wires (as usual, I started with an easy one!) I thought I’d strike while the (soldering) iron was hot and join the forum. I’ve been browsing it for a while thinking I’d like to modify my CD player, then came to my senses as I’d be annoyed if I broke it, and bought an old one off e-Bay to play with and here I am!

Good evening, Wiggley
Good evening, Wiggley !
Yes, it was a very fine day here too, about 40 miles NW of you (in Bristol) !!
You will find this site an excelent source of information and advice, and it will come from all four corners of the earth (including more than a few brits, but don't let that put you off
).
Anyway, happy soldering and tweaking !!
BTW, which CD player did you buy for modding ?

Hi Dave and Dave
The CD player I bought is a Marantz CD-45, mainly because it was cheap! It was skipping but I gave the laser a clean and it seems to be OK now. A strange thing though, the first disk I tried was a CD-R which skipped, I took the lid off and found a very dusty player and a grubby laser so gave it a clean. It now plays original CD's perfectly but won't even look at CD-R's... As it's a bit old I might have a little play (more of a practice) with it and then decide to have a go with my CD-42 as there seems to be more info about for that.

Others will know more, but my understanding is that the difference in reflected light between a 1 and a 0 on a CD-R is far less than for a true (stamped) CD, so early players often can't cope.

Most of my CD players won't play CDRs

Hi all, been here for a couple of weeks and I have just seen Wiggly's intro and it made me realise I should have posted here before I asked stupid newbie questions. Unfortunately I am too late as I have already posted several stupid questions.
Anyway a belated hello to all you diyers, I cant add any words of wisdom or offer any advice about diy hifi as I only know how to use a soldering iron, but I am looking forward to building some of the projects mentioned here.

Also if your careful you shouldnt botch anything you attempt to modify if you have all the skill necessary.
