I'm James from the UK, age 35, working and living in Bangkok city, Thailand.
My wife and I rent a house here and I am trying to put together a home theatre system in one of the downstairs rooms.
Electrical equipment that I can buy around here locally seems to be all from China and Thailand. The shops do not give specification manuals and papers to the buyer when they purchase new amps and speakers. Trying to find driver spec's on the web for these products is hard work. If i do find reference to a model number or even a brand it comes in Thai language which I can't read, and anyway there is nothing resembling a spec sheet. Manufacturers websites do not seem to exist. Manufacturers here do not seem to be as open about their products as they are back in the west. I am using English language based websited to learn about loudspeaker theory and parts.
To introduce my equipment:
1) 5.1 Amplifier (make: SKG) Model: SK328A
2) Pair of 2 way speakers (make: MS SOUND), LF 12" (part number S-31) is rated 300W and 8 ohm, HF (part number M.59) is rated 200W to 400W and 4 ohm to 8 ohm
In my attached photo of the HF driver you can see a capacitor, rated 100V and 2.2J
Problem 1: there are three elderly people living next door (and the house is not detatched, there are houses adjoining on the left and the right). Twice already I have had complaints of music too loud. I hope that by adjusting the tone/bass i can get clear sub-bass for movie watching, while avoiding resonance frequencies of various objects in the house (windows/cabinets/doors/fittings)
Using a tone generator application for windows I am able to check at which frequency different things around the house vibrate at to make an unpleasant sound.
Luckily (i think) there are no objects in the house that vibrate unfavourably within the frequency range of 35Hz to 55Hz.
problem 2: when sitting on the sofa in correct listening position listening to a movie, i just get the impression that the very top end frequencies are missing/lacking. Could this be because the HF drivers are suited to PA usage and high volume rather than CD clarity? I don't know yet.
problem 3: in my attempts to rectify problems 1 and 2 above using WinAmp's built in software EQ i find that 'spoken voice' seems to be weak/quiet
So.. i think that i have explained basically what i am up to here. Once the riddle of these primary speakers and amp is solved i will look into rear and centre speakers etc .
Would anybody care to comment on what i have written so far?
What other data/information would be useful to solve the 3 problems above?
