My name is Chris I am from Nottinghamshire, England and have only just returned to hi-fi from a long break, unfortunately I have no experience with D.I.Y. Audio at all but would like to ask your opinions.
A local man who advertises in HiFi World (Audio Specialists from Sutton-in-Ashfield) has had my CD player in for repair. It is the first time I have used the company for anything.
He carries out modifications aswell, so while he had it I asked him to see what modifications could be done.
He suggests:
40 replacement capacitors,
2 new op amps,
10 new diodes.
Now I have no technical knowledge relating to this at all, but he assures me it would have sonic benefits.
It intigues me as I have just read in HiFi+ that B&W spent a year listening to different capacitors and resistors for the Nautilus 800 Signature.
The CD player is about 10 years old and the modifications would cost £90 all in.

I would not recommend going for his upgrades as it stands, £90 seems like a lot of money to spend on a 10 yera old CD player.
I would just get the repair done, and then do some research on this and other audio forums on components, and then do the upgrades yourself, in stages, then you can easily tell if they make a significant difference. This will be more cost effective, as you can choose your own upgrades, and you are not paying for someone elses time to install them.

with all due regard to Pinkmouse, who is no dummy 😉 - I probably wouldn't even pay to have it repaired if I could back out of the deal with integrity.

Ken, thanks, I try not to be...( and mostly succeed, I think! ).
Seriously, my second system CD player is 14 years old, was fairly cheap at the time, and still sounds as good as most budget to mid price current players. So if it sounds good, and will cost more to replace then repair, then hey think Frugalphile (c), and save the enviroment a bit.🙂

That's prolly a difference in the VAT and retail distro, etc
Here, minimum bench charge would probably be 45 to 75 bucks - say 60 for average would probably be about right.
And a new Sony CD player is about 90 bucks
for thirty bucks, you're better off to toss the old one

I bought a dvp-ncp650 SACD player for a little over 200 dollars here in the states. Technology has come so far that for a "few"
bucks you can upgrade your system so much. And man It sounds so good..
tiptoeing because ... go for the new format's it's worth it BIG TIME
