I'm from Minneapolis, MN. Looks like there might be a few of you here. Also, my name is Adam - looks like that's 2 Adams in Minneapolis... 🙂 I also keep fish, play Go, read books, play video games, have a dog. I'm 32.
I've got a background in physics, DIY tendancies, and an interest in high end audio, but I must say the stuff I've read around here leaves me scratching my head. While I have read some about it, I have only built one pair of speakers (long ago, sounded terrible), I have soldered but not on audio stuff. I'll probably post a fair mess of foundation questions so I can figure out how to think about some of this stuff.
Projects I have in mind:
1) buy and modify a sonic impact T-amp. I've seen a few suggestions about things to do to this one, but I note that your tri-path wiki doesn't have much for mod suggestions... Maybe when I get the project sorted a bit better I'll try to update the wiki.
2) make some speakers to go with it. I was thinking of the Cyburgs Needles from this site. With the Tang Band driver. Small, full range speaker = cheap! We like cheap, because it makes experimentation less risky. I was thinking of the larger "stick", but haven't found the listed driver for sale, and the bamboo version I found was something like $40/driver, which wouldn't be bad for a project... after I've built my skills a bit (plus it sounds like the driver substitution is still a bit of a question mark..?). The "viech" project also looks interesting, but hell, it all looks interesting.
3) bug electronics guys for tips on how to repair my amp. I've got a Linn Powertec that has ceased to function. Turn on: half second of sound/music, then silence. Turn off: silence... then a big pop! and a bit of music which fades away. I've had it in for repair twice, and both times it comes back to me with a bill that notes "replaced power supply transistor", this fix works for about 2 weeks before the problem begins to return. Also I have a CD player the output stage of which needs attention... that's even further down the road.
These are what I was thinking about as I joined the forum. If you have any initial thoughts about them feel free to share them with me. I'm still in the forethought phase of each, and am not yet prepared to actually do anything, but that's the best time to hear certain types of advice.
Anyway, cool forum you've got here. I've enjoyed poking around it. Hopefully I can translate some of these cool ideas into action that will benefit my ears.

Welcome to the forum. You'll find it useful and at times pretty interesting; there's quite a few folks with good physics backgrounds to keep everyone else honest.
