Skip to the bottom for a quick summary 🙂
Hello, I am very interested in building a projector for my parents. I have been reading the boards for over 200 hours, and I think i have everything straight. My parents are old school, and while they can use a computer I wouldnt be comfortable leaving them stranded with a tv computer. So, the only feasible solution in my mind is a computer monitor because of the higher resolution. If I buy a composite to vga adapter would a computer monitor work with any video input? The signal would Always be coming from a reciever(it took me about 3 years to teach my parents the whole surround sound system, but now my dad teaches me stuff on it lol). This is my last unknown. Thanks for the help.
For those of you that dont wanna read that
Will a computer monitor adapt on its own to varying video imputs from an audio/video reciever(ie no computer to be seen)? Thanks

if you buy a converter you should be fine it will take anything with RCAs xbox, dvd player, reciever etc and go to the lcd monitor the monitor will act just like a tv ... but without a tuner.
That makes this very easy. Is there a reason why everyone uses a pc? I am about to start on my own, and was going to do a lilliput, but I have a high performance pc... is there an advantage to being able to use the pc? Thanks alot
I'm new around here myself and just in the information gathering stage, but I can answer your question. I will use a PC with my projector because my last techie project was to build a PVR - essentially a Tivo that is made from a typical computer. Add a capture card to your computer, such as a Happauge (sp?) PVR-150, and some software (GBPVR/MythTV/Windows XP Media Center Edition/etc.) and you can record whatever you want basically.
So a computer is going to be my primary source of viewing material, it's just convienent that the projector I build have a DVI or VGA input. As an added bonus I'll get a better picture than S-video or composite (and right now I'm using S-video to get things from my PVR to my TV).
If you are interested in more info on PVRs, the website to check out is byopvr.com. Cheers.
