Heathkit EA-2 customization

Well, I got the EA2 Heathkits stripped of their original parts, threw away the input sections, and hooked the resulting "mono block power amps" (at 12W each) up to my Tekton Pendragons.

Results?

QUITE surprising - Here's a friend's impression of the Heathkit's from another forum:

A visit to mr and mrs Boomzilla's! | The Emotiva Lounge

The modest 'kits DO have some "special" to them... Many thanks to those here who guided me through the modifications.

And while I have the experts here, may I ask another question? I have a Dynaco ST70, stock but for a Tubes4HiFi driver board. It sounds like it has a midrange glare. What might I do (preferably very inexpensively) to abate that glare?

Thanks - Boomzilla

The ST70 has been driven by the following equipment:

Oppo BDP-105 disc player used as a DAC / preamp
Oppo BDP-105 disc player used as a DAC with Emotiva BASX PT-100 preamp
Emotiva BASX PT-100 preamp used as a DAC / preamp
Emotiva Stealth DC-1 used as a DAC / preamp

The midrange glare was noticeable with Axiom M80 speakers, Axiom M100 speakers and Tekton Pendragon speakers.

The glare was there using both the 4 & 8 ohm taps.

The glare was there in both pentode & triode modes.

The glare was there with three or four different brands of speaker cables.

The glare was there in two different listening rooms.

Although I'm sure you're right, Deepgrove, I'm thinking that I'd rather not change the driver board if I can avoid it. Tube rolling? Bias changes? Switching the heaters to DC? Those are fair game. Even replacing a cap or resistor on the amp to slightly different values is doable, but I'm NOT wanting to do major surgery on this amp.

If I can't get it to sound like I want, then I'll sell it. No skin off my nose... But if I can get rid of that midrange glare, I can live with the bass.

Thanks - Boom
