Headphone out to line level adaptor

Hi Folks! I have got to come up with a solution for this simple task: Turning a stereo headphone output into a mono line or mic level signal. I would usually have to do this by using a 1/8th" to dual rca or 1/4" connectors, two direct boxes and then plug them into a line mixer and then to whatever amplifier I wish. That is too many cables and too much time!
I figure that one might use some resistors to mimic a headphone load and further to appease the line level input on some amplification device?
Or would this require a pair of transformers? I want to keep this as small as possible, just something easy to connect an iPod or laptop to an amplifier in mono. Can anyone help?? Thanks!
Anthony
