Have a AV receiver with 125 wpc, Now I want to buy a 2 channel power amplifier to pump the two main speakers.

If the av receiver and power amplifer have the same power, such as 120wpc, Does the power amplifier has significant improvement over the av receiver?

No.

You need to find out the gain of the existing power amplifier.
Then you need to arrange or select the same gain for the new amplifier.

If you buy or build a better amplifier then you might get better performance.
But the built carries the risk of getting much worse performance due to errors and build decisions.

Note that most multichannel receivers are rated with one channel driven. With all channels operating the output can be considerably less.

Read some information online, says the stand alone power amp will provide more solid performance than av receivers, but not clear about it.
