If you're still contemplating your own CNC, this is one of the more interesting ones that can be done cheaply Plastic Monstrosity -- The 3D Printed CNC for 4x8' Plywood by spiffcow - Thingiverse . Designed as a full 4x8 machine, it would probably be very good if you scaled it down to say 2x4.
Pretty hard to argue with 35/sheet though.
