Hand sanitizer

One for the chemists or maybe just the smart guys out there.
I have bottles of Methyl Hydrate and bottles of Ethyl alcohol 50%. Can I just mix those two together to achieve the 70% solution they suggest is ideal for hand sanitizing or is there more I need to know. Is it better just to water down the MH to 70%? I have more than I need of both so I'm not using anything precious here.
TIA.

I don’t know how much more serious it can get than ‘toxic’......how about ‘extremely toxic’?

Even when absorbed through the skin

I don't know about the safety aspects, but here's the mathematics as I see them:

Take 1 litre of 100% pure alcohol and 1 litre of 50% alcohol solution.
In the first case you have 1 litre of 100% alcohol and in the second case you have 0.5 litre of 100% alcohol.
Combining the two would give you 1.5 litre of 100% alcohol in 2 litre of solution - so that makes a (1.5/2) x 100% = 75% solution.

Wood alcohol. Fun stuff. If you made it in Mexico and imported it here, US FDA would warn-against, maybe confiscate.

"During the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found a number of hand sanitizer products being sold that were labeled as containing ethanol but tested positive for methanol contamination.[38] Due to the toxic effects of methanol when absorbed through the skin or ingested, in contrast to the relatively safer ethanol, the FDA ordered recalls of such hand sanitizer products containing methanol, and issued an import alert to stop these products from illegally entering the U.S. market.[39]"

I thot you wanted a moisturizer too? Like Aloe gel?

AND... how much sanitizer are you rubbing? After initial scarcity, I find ample supplies in WalMart and a lot of $2 and 10/$8.88 bottles I can distribute among cars and door-yards, or tie to dogs/kids.

How about distilling the ethanol to get a higher percentage?

In the US, that would be illegal. (Without taxes and paperwork...)

It is also increasingly difficult to distill as the proof goes up. There is not *that* much difference in temperature between alcohol and water vapor.

It *appears* that distilling moonshine in Canada without being busted is near as annoying as doing it in the US. You can own a still, you can't distill alcohol in it, without Federal liquor distiller’s license and maybe Provincial permits. However it may be that the laws are not enforced unless the distiller is notorious (making truckloads, stinking up the woods, and not paying the TAX). Evading a $20 tax on a few gallons of sanitizer is not worth a Sheriff's time.

Thanks PRR, but been there and done it. Not that hard at all. It's pure stupidity to get caught and besides, this is would be for a noble cause such as doing ones part to help squash the pandemic.

If one would be too fearful to make it, select LCBO stores here carry the american equivalent to everclear called Alcool at 95%.
You just have to ask the manager as they do not keep it on the shelf.
This route would be a safe way to boost the sanitizer percentage.

...Alcool at 95%....

Like $24 a liter.

Sanitizer in Canada is $10/liter for sink-size, or $5/liter in jugs. Two 50ml pocket-bottles $5 marked down to $2 on clearance.

I can't see any way wood alcohol has a place here. While Cal might be trusted not to abuse it, Cal can't possibly(?) be using enough to justify the few dollars saved. If Cal is selling it, probably best not to even mention methanol on a public forum.

My goodness you guys.
The methyl hydrate is bought from the local hardware store and used for surface prep when caulking and other things when you can't have a residue like with other solvents.
The ethyl is a body rub and came from a buddy who is the shipper for a medical supply company. When it gets near its expiry date they are required to dispose of it. I am part of the disposal chain. No, you can't drink it or distill it further. Yes, I am well aware of how that's done but this stuff contains camphor and other things so even if I wanted to...

I would worry more about transdermal absorbtion in these days of much more frequent hand washing, which depletes the protective oils in the skin.

As to purifying ethanol in Ontario, in the north I'd 'jack' it. Leave it outside in subzero(F) weather, in the morning pour off the liquid, leaving ice behind.
Repeat until bored.

The lowest temperature at which you got ice will tell you the proof.

Then, if you get vaccinated, add fresh cider for applejack, or other fruit for brandy. Win-win.

FWIW here in Argentina 94-96% ethyl alcohol is freely sold over the counter, even at supermarkets and such.
That would mean around 180-190 proof if I am not mistaken.

Clearly Authorities do not fear it being drunk for recreational purposes; it is even labelled "Food Grade", go figure, to make it certain it does not contain Methyl or "heavy" alcohols, both of which are toxic.

So I buy a lot of it, mainly to degrease my hands before handling PCBs, speaker voice coils I am assembling, diluting rosin to make solder flux, mixing it with phosphoric acid to make sheet metal treatment before painting, etc.

Always mildly suprised at the big deal other Countries make out of it, while on the contrary they have so much drinkable alcohol available, only in lower concentrations (around 40%)

Making Covid sanitizer is just a side use.
