OK, I had once upon a time sworn off of Hammond transformers (Push-Pull) because they were too bright and not deep enough in the bass. However, I must rethink my opinion.
I have a mini-console that uses a 10 inch woofer and a 5X7 horn. The 5X7 horn handles the mid-highs and the woofer... the rest. I have never liked the sound of the horns because they are too peaky in the mid range around 1-2KHz
However, Just for grins and giggles, I plugged in a pair of Hammond 1620's in place of the originals just to hear what if any difference they made. Holy cow! Not only is there more detail, the highs are astounding (not overbearing) and the mids are very bearable and sweet, not harsh.
So, I guess that the overall combination makes for the recommendation to be to go with Hammonds. Next thing to try is to UL connect them!
It is interesting how this supports the thought that one must match the gear to each other for best overall affect.
