you may well be right this could be a pitfall. which is why i want to experiment further with this concept.
Rather than half-shpere, how about half-sonotube? A large diameter tube. Provides "automatic" wings without a "flat" surface.
If the tube diameter is not minimal(almost no baffle) then it's the worst shape regarding diffraction:

I'm not talking about mounting a driver in the end of a sonotube. I'm suggesting that the driver be mounted on the SIDE of the tube cut to be half-round.
