Hafler TA1600 recapping... looking for more bass

A big thank you to all who contributed here. I just recapped an old TA1100 by replacing all the lousy 10uF/16V surface mount caps with leaded 25V types. Took barely 2 hours including adjusting the bias. Sounds pretty nice now.

The 10uF/16V electrolytic capacitors (C21 and C22) on both channels were bad (pF range). Swapped both of those out, the amp works perfectly now.

I am going to change caps on a 1600. I cannot see the C21 and C22 caps..? I see the 10uf 16V caps - but none of them are labelled C21 or C22 - can't see C21 or C22 on the board - I am looking at just one channel - could they be on the other board for the other channel?

Now I think I see them. Are C21 and C22 small vertical chip electrolytic? Right next to the CMRR?

But these caps do not go through the board so not sure how to get them out and put new ones in?

OK I see some ways of doing it - looks tricky.

Just be aware of the possibility that ALL those surface mount caps are toast. I used solder paste to make the soldering of the new caps easier.

Thanks for the tips. Yes I will change all the caps and I am good with changing the larger electrolytic - it was the small v-chip style I have never done.

Did you replace the v-chip style C21 and C22 with a regular electrolytic cap. of the same rating? If so I wonder how you got them soldered on the board?

Yes I replaced all the surface mount with leaded types. With the soldering paste it's much easier.

it appear to be the nature (lack of bass) of the design... no part swapping will enhance. Time to move on...
