Do you think it is at all feasible/ worth the hassle to attempt to convert a 2005 model year Denon AVR from it's current output stage to class d? I could use outboard psu for the amps.....leave the toroidal in the Denon for the existing preamp.

Am I daydreaming or has anyone attempted or even tsken a reasonably modern receiver apart to check for viability?

Not so long ago I took a defect Denon AVR (2308) apart. My initial hope was to repair the Denon but I soon realized the effort I would have to put in. If you have looked inside, there are boards and components everywhere. They are nicely arranged on a plurality of boards held together by connectors in a 3D structure. The power amplifier is somewhere in the middle.
I gave in and took the whole unit apart for reuse of many of the components.
In theory you can replace the power amplifier with class D. But, the time it takes to identify exactly which components you need to replace and which to interface with is not a quick task. Next, when you replace a class AB power amplifier with a class D amplifier, you suddenly have a rather noisy element in the middle of boards with noise sensitive components. It is likely to create problems in the further electronics and you will have huge problems getting access to do measurements.

You may use the line-out and connect an external class D stage. After having seen the complexity, I would not do any modifications and hardly any fault-finding inside such a unit.

Brilliant reply from you as usual. Thank you. Your knowledge is vastly above mine so if you didn't fancy it then it is a definite no for me.!

The obvious is to use the pre outs, as you mention. I am aware of this so I guess I will try and compare SQ to see if the Denon pre imparts any nastiness.!
