Try the soft limiter circuit I have offered up, it is as close to a valve distortion as you will get.

I hooked up the amplifier to a Fane Collosus 18 inch sub.
I turned it up and it just about blew the roof off !
Wow the lateral mosfet amp really rocks.
With no signal in it is dead quiet with almost zero hum/hiss.
The tone controls make a huge difference to the sound, the bass is very deep and loud and the treble gives the sound a lot of bite.

I did originally build it just as an exercise then dump it on ebay but I think I will keep it.
