With my CD player project I have now got to the stage where it's the PSU and chassis that come next. The digital filters in the FPGA, analog filters on the mainboard and user interface for CD player module start looking very good.
I have a grounding question that is pretty important right now. I have organized the power supply so that there is something close to a power star in the middle of the ground plane of the filter board where all ground connectors (signal and power) come together. That way loops are kept small, and signals crosstalk is minimized. The PSU board thus features 5 separate regulator circuits.
The mains connector has N, L and ground. The mains ground is connected straight to the chassis of the box. On the signal side the phono and XLR signal ground connect to the ground plane of the filter board but NOT to the chassis.
So the question is: What sort of connexion should I have between the ground star on the filter board and the chassis at mains ground? Capacitor? Resistor? The two in series or parallel?
Also, should I rather let the chassis float? I'm designing something that eventually may get a CE mark here.
The goal is off course to make sure the users don't sport sparks when touching the box. And at the same time there should be no harmful ground currents going through the signal connectors.
Hints and reference to other links are much appreciated!
Cheers,
Børge
