How the device you're talking about works isn't relevant to the conundrum in this thread. I don't need such a unit - I've been trying to describe the setup in my posts.
In a nutshell I need a self-standing DAC which has fibre-optic/spdif/toslink 'in' and analogue audio 'out'.
I've been looking at the Digital device/DAC section of this forum and frankly it's all fairly mind boggling - there's all these guys buying and modding these cheap units or others spending £100's on off-the-shelf stuff. Looking through all the relevant threads I can't find a straight answer recommending a reasonably price DAC that would be decent when it's got better caps installed!
When I find the right DAC unit to buy I'll make a post here and let people know what my options turned out to be.
Thanks
John

Amazon.com: FiiO D3 Digital to Analog Audio Converter - 192kHz/24bit Optical and Coaxial DAC: Musical Instruments
Just get one of those. Itl likely sound better than your edirol, does what you need, and costs very little. Even includes an optical cable.
