Greetings from Finland

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

I have followed the discussions on this site with great interest. Sometimes I have had an urge to comment on something or ask additional details, so I figured out I might register as well. I found the topics regarding the John Linsley-Hood amplifier particularly interesting, as we have constructed one with a friend. It is basically the latest version described on the site maintained by Geoff Moss (excellent site!), sporting 12.5 V rails and quiescent current of 3.0 A. The reason for such a low rail voltage is that we are using old but big British telecom transformers with 12 V secondaries. Double capacitance multipliers take away a couple of volts, too. The constant current source feeding the input transistor is powered by self-designed discrete regulator. There was a thread for the ugliest selfmade amplifiers. I bet I would have won the competition, if I only had a camera 😉

Regarding myself, I am an undergraduate student (sixth year) in Computer Science at University of Kuopio and work as a UNIX administrator at the department. My other hobbies include experiments with high voltage (no, not tube plate voltages, but in the range of tens or hundreds of kilovolts), maintaining a BBS software for UNIX (you know, dialup lines etc.) and last, but not least, motorcycling.

So, actually I wanted to just say greetings from Finland 🙂

(It isn't morning here, but I could not think of anything else for opening. Besides, my biorhytm is kinda weird.)

Hi and welcome.

That sounds like quite an unusual hobby. What kind of experiments
does one do for a hobby with such voltages? 😕

:att'n: Warning to other forum members, don't take up his hobby
unless you truly know what you are doing!!!

Hi,

It's always nice to see another Finn here, especially now as we seem to share two things: I too live in Kuopio (I even work almost next to university) and have same hobby, motorcycles (well, if you must know, you can see it here, at the bottom of the page)..

Anyway, welcome on my behalf also.

With Best Regards,
Janne

Hello guys and thanks for welcoming!

Dave:

It's a traditional American-made V-twin powered bike. You might say ugly as hell, but the uneven firing order of its powerplant is music to my ears 🙂

Christer:

Perhaps the word 'experiments' sounded a bit too scientific. I recall having watched the small arcs of an electric fence when I was kid and then the idea of high voltage struck me like million volts (no pun intended 🙂 ). Once I created a plasmaball but the arc melted through the glass of the bulb. I guess that's why they use current limiting resistors in commercial units... Another example is trying to figure out how sodiumchloride (ordinary salt) reacts to plasma hotter that the surface of the Sun. Hefty amounts of chlorine gas was the result. And yes, I think these might be classified as "don't try this at home" 😎

Janne:

Nice to see local folks here, I guess the world is not that big I once thought. Nice bike, but looks somehow naked (you must have washed it before taking a photo 🙂 ). I hope to meet you on the road soon. Perhaps the roads will be clear enough by the beginning of March for some serious ride 🙂

Thanks Jan 🙂

I noticed from your post that my user account name is different from my real name. The real name is "Hannu Lyytinen", so just call me "Hannu". I am those who prefer to write under their real names, it seems more like discussions in real life. I have no problems with people writing under a nickname, either 🙂
