Hello All. Want to introduce myself. Michael here. I have been selling selling surplus electronics/parts here in Boulder for the last 20 plus years. I recently moved back into an engineering tech position and have always been interested in DIY - mostly test gear. I always end up at this forum via my searches - headphone/line amps, oscillators, info about the QA400 etc. I hope to be able to offer help or reference material for those that need it and here or there get some questions answered. Maybe be involved in the group buys, (laying out your own PCB's is fun but a rather long process).
Anyway thanks

Good to make your acquaintance, Michael. Accurately measuring things has often been an intriguing challenge to me too. Of course, you're in the backyard of the NIST Lab so it's probably easier for you to get some insight into how the pro's do it!

Hi Dale, thanks for the reply. Working at store that sells components I got to make a fair number of acquaintances who I could ask info of. Unfortunately the retail environment wasn't really conducive to focusing on building stuff even though I had a bench there. I have few friends that contract at the bureau as we call nist in Boulder and I have heard some interesting stories of screw ups and some that are able check their equipment to primary standards.

. . . I have few friends that contract at the bureau as we call nist in Boulder . . . .
So it's still "the Bureau"? That's interesting - I think the name officially changed to "National Institute of Standards and Technology" (NIST) around the mid 1980's, but it's only in the last few years that I consistently refer to it as NIST when speaking. For some reason, "National Bureau of Standards" or "NBS" got very firmly embedded in me at a relatively early age and took over two decades to get the old name out of my mind.
