Now I have character map on the quick launch section of the taskbar.

I can get the same µ with ALT+0181

but, ALT+230 does not work (post6)

You mean the characters... yes.

Click the one/s you want and click "select" and then "copy". That character/s is now in your clipboard and can be pasted such as here ÆÝõÐ (hope that doesn't spell anything rude).
