great capacitor video

A variety of capacitors known as "Black Beauty" or "Bumble Bee" are found in much of the classic Tek gear. Some, not all, of these capacitors age very poorly, including shorting out, which can harm the surrounding components in a circuit. Many experts recommend replacing all Black Beauties with modern capacitors. Modern equivalents are not a problem to find.
If one does not wish to replace the old capacitors, testing them is an option. There are three main ways that capacitors go bad.

  • The capacitor can leak DC (or short completely).
  • The capacitor can drift significantly in capacitance.
  • The capacitor's equivalent series resistance (ESR) can increase significantly.

Mr Carlson's Lab is a great channel, knowledgeable guy.

A couple of updates to this vid:

#4, Ceramic Disc Cap, yes don't fail often but they DO go noisy especially in tube circuits.
#6, modern Silver Mica Cap, yes stable and don't fail often but as per 4, also can go noisy, especially in HV circuits.

cheers

Paul Carlson has been around for a while and makes some nice videos with very clear reverberation free audio. Although a little too slow paced for me. But I wish to Gawd he'd stop pronouncing the "L" in solder! He's the only one in the world that does it. It's like finger nails on the blackboard to my ears. Every dictionary I've seen says the "L" is silent. PAUL, PLEASE STOP IT!

The silent L in solder is a U.S. convention for the most part not followed in the rest of the English speaking world FYI.

I suppress the L although of British background and am taken to task for it by my British and Canadian friends.
