Dunno.. I've bought several Anteks (I'm in Vancouver)
They typically ran ~50/60$ delivered (400va, 18x18, shielded) I wasn't sure on their quality .. Before.. buying.
Happily as predicted on here..the things have proven V Good.
Zero noises, no problems whatsoever. Note they are designed built as 50hz units which means their VA rating is notably higher on 60hz.. A freebie bonus imo.
These are buy and forget about them good.
One can do worse 😉

When I inquired last week, the Antek 400VA was $51 and the shipping charge would have been $46.That's USD.
There's a good chance that a heavy parcel like that would trigger GST and PST tax at my end, with a Canada Post handling fee on top.
So your $60 (USD or CAD?) was a real bargain!
In the USA, where UPS and FedEx aren't voraciously 😱 expensive, the economics are completely different.
I've also used Antek and other Chinese toroids (lower VA) in projects and they worked fine.
VictoriaGuy,
I last ordered from Antek June 2015 and a 300VA + 400VA + shipping was $135 USD.
(Today the antek shopping cart with shipping is $138.)
I did pay HST + Canada post handling as well.

I think that the postage rates are structured so that you can save with heavier parcels- so buying several transformers in one order can bring down the unit cost.
I have a shelf full of unused transformers that proves it is a tempting choice!🙂

...I have a shelf full of unused transformers...
Maybe it is time to stop shopping and start building! 🙂
Tme can be a good source, but I don't know about freight to Canada
Transfer Multisort Elektronik - Electronic components
They also have Toroidy transformers

Well, I have a much bigger shelf with diy projects (completed) that I'm not using for music! Tube amps, chip amps, DACs, guitar amps....😱
Too proud to sell them for less than the materials cost, but too attached to them to tear them down or throw away...I doubt I'm the only one in that situation....🙂
I did sell some unused Myref boards last year, so that's a start....
I'm in a similar situation though I did 'repurpose' an original Zen amp into an F4.
My class A amp count (not all diy) should be at 8 by the end of this week and
likely go higher as I'm itching to use up some parts... 🙂

I only have two class A amps, but I might have to start planning a strategy for hiding them if I build more. Trying to explain why I needed to build the F4 just brought a blank look from my wife.
Sorry to be so off topic. Maybe I should start a new thread on hiding amplifiers.

Hi Dennis, welcome to the A.B.A.

Eventually you have the right transformer for the next project already in stock and no postage/handlig/tax charge to pay in moving it from the shelf to the chassis.Maybe VictoriaGuy is like me and keeps buying the wrong transformers? 🙂
The way shipping costs continues to escalate, havings transformers on hand might be seen as an investment.

I agree. Shipping is a huge cost consideration when ordering from the US for Canadian customers. I bought 1 antek 400va transformer at 50$us and the shipping was 45us to get it here. Then with fees, tax and dollar exchange etc it was over 150$ Can to land it here for a 50$us transformer.
For 2 Primrose audio custom built 800va transformers delivered was 400$can including shipping and tax, so a much better value in absolute terms. Shipping was only 50can. for a box that was at least 3 times as heavy as the Antek shipment.
The 400va Antek works great and is absolutely silent in an aleph J. If you live in the US with reasonable shipping it's a bargain IMO.
particularly in view of the increasing copper cost that forces many transformers to be designed with less copper content. The way shipping costs continues to escalate, havings transformers on hand might be seen as an investment.
The old transformers tend to have more/thicker copper.

😀 In truth it was/is to my Point Roberts receiving address.
Recently though. Note; there are NO border fees or pst /gst nonsense at up to 250$ values (often 300$).
As direct example:I picked 200$ of Saab bits... just yesterday am, Free shipping too.
A 10 min drive from my home though. In your case likely an unworkable solution.
Yer hooped.. not putting too a fine a point on it
The never mentioned Price of living behind a Moat and Why I sold my Victoria properties years ago 😉
After reading VictoriaGuys good experience with Richard at Primrose, I decided to order my transformer from him as well. I ordered a 400VA transformer, with screen, core band and mounting hardware. Total shipped to my home, taxes included came to $158.20 And, as was stated earlier I was able to give some money to a local Canadian business. I'll definitely purchase through Richard again in the future.
Let's hope, for both our sakes that the transformers arrive as advertised!🙂After reading VictoriaGuys good experience with Richard at Primrose, I decided to order my transformer from him as well.
SumR offers good transformers my only beef with them is their price varies greatly depending if you order often or not...a regular DIY customer will have very good price but for the rest of us occasionnal buyer its just OK price wise. No price list either available on their site...

I found his pricing to be very good and I have never ordered from Primrose or Sumr before. The Anteks are certainly a good value if you live where you can get them shipped for a reasonable cost. The custom made 34v 816va transformers I got from Primrose were about 20% less than the nearest equivalent stock Plitron and Primrose had a cheaper shipping option available. I think Primrose is a new spin off venture for the Sumr company and it may be worth getting a quote from them going forward to see if they are competitive.
