I am looking for a good woofer witch is cheap and will perform well in small boxes... I was considering a vented design and I would like to know if you guys have any ideas, as I am not experienced with what the Theile/Small Parameters mean. The driver has to be less then $100.00 USD and I prefer a poly cone. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Slice

p.s. where can i find out what the Theile/Small Parameters mean?

subs

my opinions :

cerwin vega
kenwood is okish apparently
sony is ok i heard. Personaly i cant say but cerwin vega has a good rep.

Fs=resonance freq. this is the lowest note Possible that the speaker will play in the correct box(below resonance the speaker wil distort more,30hz is probably ok for most music.)

Q=quality factor,damping factor.lower usualy better(more control)
eg Q=0.33

Excursion-for a 10inch possibly 7mm is ok.
the more excursion the louder it can play ,in theory.

efficiency --

90db/1watt is good for a 10inch sub.
compared to a 87db/1watt sub, the 90db/1watt sub will need only half the power.(in theory)

ported boxes are harder cos u have to tune them reasonbly accurately.use winISD www.linearteam.org

or just use manufacturers recomended box

this from an employee of Jo-Di's car audio

Hi I've been working at Jo-Di's car audio store based in Connecticut for about 4 months now and I think your best bet is something like the Autotek SS104 whick you can pick up at www.caraudioexpert.com for $70. It has a ten inch cone and 40 mm surround. Yes you have it right it is a high exscursion woofer and while produce lots of big and move monterous air. If I also may sujest going to your local car audio dealership and buying it from them if this isn't a problem. They can help you with many questions.

I also have a few questions why you want to use a ported box. What kind music do you listen to mainly? A ported box while resonate a constant tone whick will be heard when ever you play music. A non ported box is more geared towards fast clean response like jazz or even heavy metal and a bandpass box is mainly for rap and possible some funk with really loud lows. so you have choices.

What?!

Ive had a lot of experience with ported boxes, and they dont do this. They cant. Its impossible.

A ported box is tuned to a certain frequency that just determines how the box will support the speakers front wave with the rear one. It doesnt all of a sudden create its own sine wave out of no where.

I do agree with your box suggestions, however. But a good ported box will still play music very well. I myself dont see the need, as cabin gain will make up for a large amount of the sealed box rolloff.

sony is ok i heard

This is not true. I have had nothing but problems with their drivers and their company. For around the same price, Infinity Reference subs are much much better.

I like Kicker CompVR's if your going under $100. They can handle 400W RMS, and sound very nice in a proper cabinet. The only drawback is they like perticularly large ones. A .707 alignment for a 12" is 4.6 cubes. But. if you have the space, you wont be dissapointed in anyway.

>> ported box while resonate a constant tone whick will be >>heard when ever you play music.

no sub does this.that is completely untrue.

a decent ported box sounds great and goes lower than sealed boxes..
bad designed ones are crap

sealed boxes have lower group delay and nicer transients.better sound.

in a car thumping 50hz tones you dont need audiophile hifi quality sound.

-so porteds are fine u just have to tune them.

bandpass are tricky.
use winISD or use manufacturers boxes.-they are often boomy and honky but loud.

i'm fairly sure more Xmax means you can put more power to the woofer without excceding the "linear" region of the suspension or motor. I agree with the sealed boxes, they can give a somewhat flat response in car, so why not use that? i know there are reasons...
