It's been awhile since i ran reef aquariums but i'm pretty sure 10K means it's more blue, which is bad, and the opposite spectrum of too yellow/red (below 5K)

you want pure while light so the colors are all true.........

5500 being perfect i think? so the ushio being 5200 or whatever is closest to white light. 7500 being acceptable as well? nothing above that though.

correct me if i'm wrong....

the higher the number, the more blue/purple..

that's why symbiotic zo0-algae that live in some corals and tropical mollusks are blue and purple, because they are sitting in water where the top of the ocean is getting UV light in the blue spectrum...

well, i'd like to know too since this is a real metal halide ballast and not the sodium one that you have to use the ushio conversion lamp which is what most of everyone here is using since it's only 28 dollars. (maybe this 48 dollar one is better since there are more lamps available)

Grotke would know but you posted this question on the wrong page, this should be on the "lighting" section when you look under the main "moving image" section.

could a moderator please move this too the Lighting section?

ok, the bulb you just posted is for a sodium metal hallide ballast like i was talking about... (it's only 28.00 for ballast from ebay vendor that is listed under "cheap halide ballast" thread in the Lighting section of our forum.

the ushio is 38.00 from atlantic which Grotke listed on the forum...

but i'm really not qualified to tell you which to get yet because when i had a reef aquarium, we only ran Electronic ballasts, while these two types are both magnetic and operate differently.

so i don't want to tell you which lamp or which magnetic ballast to get,

but please read this article right here, then you will know all that i know about these DIY halides....
