Hi!
One thing I found interesting is that respected german magazine ct often pointed out that a lot of cd-roms and DVD-roms (although physically present) do not have a properly functioning spdif-out. Either with no signal at all, or with faulty signals.
So if you are intending to use it for audio purposes, directly connected to external DAC, you should try to find out about that (I know of former Asus cdroms who worked flawlessly, and my current Pioneer slot-in DVD rom also works alright).
If you intend to go through the soundcard, or just do ripping / copying, take a look at common computer audio forums (hydrogenaudio), or ask EAC users, they can help you with that.
Bye,
Arndt

Abbility to read CD-R, and CD-RW's would be appreciated (actually a MUST...), and the old Nec 6Xe (and similar) mentioned on this forum earlier would have problems with CD-RW....wouldn't it ?
Have an old Pioneer slot-in 32X CD-ROM, but this one also have problems with CD-RW's...
In the "computer-world" outside the Plextor is considered to be the best drives.....but haven't seen it mentioned in here.....
....and witch CD-ROM's have I2S internally ?
Thanks
Lyra

LiteOn drives are very good.
If you going to be reading audio off the CDs using a PC, then almost any new drive will be good as they all can read bit-perfect using an app like EAC.

I doubt there are any.
