Good 300-400w amp kit for a beginner?

If you ever run across an old Ashley FTX series amp don't hesitate to grab it!!!
I used to run mine bridged on my Sunn215 that had two MCM Select 15's 400/800 watt drivers.
I used that with a stock Sunn 610 on top with a Sunn Concert Slave powering it.
One of the best setups I have ever had.....I still have the thing!!

I had a choice of using a Marshall Valvestate 8100, Ampeg V4-b or the Art Power Plant and SGE for use as preamps.

I now have Pyle PPA10's in the 610 now and I haven't really tried it out yet but it is super loud now.
The MCM's are gone now because I had to put them in my EV PA cabinets and then I repaired the Altec Lansing's that were in the EV's and put them in the Sunn215.

I sure miss those MCM's though as they were the very best $120 driver I have ever seen or heard for back in the mid 90's!!
But now I need to find a pair of 15's that can keep up with the Pyle's.

I had the Ashley FTX2000 bridged on them and I couldn't kill either one of them and I tried...Trust me I tried!!!

The Pyle PPA10's roll of on the high end to much for my liking for guitar but I think that they will be alright for bass.
They do have a 95.7db efficiency as I had tested it here,

I like that gut wrenching bass like you have described as well and those MCM's were the very first drivers to give me that with a 1000watts to back it up!!!

I can't even imagine what that 610 is going to be like in I finally get it set up with the Ashley.
So far I have had just my Peavey Renown 400 on them and even outside they knocked me back a bit.

For my second rig I used an Ampeg V4-B and a Sunn Concert slave with 6 Radio shack ( Yes RS!!) 6.5" poly polypropylene drivers and an RS 18" sub.

It wasn't the loudest thing ever but it had a very nice sound, many pro bass players that came over to use it in the studio just loved it.

One of them even said he liked it better than his brand new Trace Elliot setup, so he left that thing at home when his band (Power House) came over to practice.
Yes the band "Power House" that now does big corporate gigs for Donald Trump and Rachel Ray and stuff!!! 😉

Here are some pictures of my rig back then I still have every thing except the Marshall and the Six 6.5's as they got stolen, and the PA cabinets weren't mine.
Also a shot of the Sunn stack as it is now.

Enjoy!!!

Those MCM's seem almost too good to be true, selling now for $79.99. I've got one of those Sunn 2x15 cabs that a buddy scored on the side of the road, empty. Right now it's got a pair of 50w guitar speakers in it, but a pair of the MCM's looks an attractive option to convert it to bass duty. I guess the cast frame keeps 'em affordable. I've been looking around for the 18" version of my PAS, waiting for a good deal on e-bay.

The power amps that typically come available in the used market in my area are 99% of the time either Crown or QSC. I'm gonna jump on the next Crown that comes along at a decent price.

That's a monstrous set-up you've got there.

Gonna go take a look at an older Crown XLS402. Listed for $200, though I'm told the early model doesn't have the high pass filter it does have a clip limiter. 260w stereo or 500w bridged at 8ohms, should get me right in the ballpark.

Anybody here use one of those FMOD high-pass filters?

Mr. Passinwind, could you perhaps refer me specifically to the threads you describe from talkbass? The DIY amps you've heard? That sounds like the kind of info that I'm looking for.

Johnny,

Talkbass recently did a platform upgrade and many old threads are now hard to find via the search function. I'll give you some recent thread links I did find, and I'll PM you if I find others eventually. Except for the all-tube one, all of these DIY ones use an SMPS, mostly just using the ICE modules with one built in. If you're near Portland you are welcome to come out here and try mine, and the guy with the tube one is in Portland and might be a good resource to draw on.

I've played through this one:

WoW !!!
I haven't check on those MCM's in a while!!
When I got them the were like $129 I think, and when they shipped them to me the bill said $109.

At $79 I would not hesitate to get some....Dang I wish I had the funds right now!!!

Their tone matched up quite nicely to the Sunn 10's and when I would slap the strings I felt like some one had just decked me in the chest!!!

Their extension to 3500Hz was nice and they sounded just like the 10's only they were more capable of that mass thump with the Ashley providing the power to do so.
Unlike the Pyle's 2500Hz roll off where the Altec's are naturally brighter now.

But those Pyle's do pack a massive punch as well with their 96db efficiency and 200 watt rms power handling per driver.
Even using a clean guitar with the Renown it was scary loud and I have never ever heard my guitar echo through the local tree's like that before!!!

Although they sounded fine clean, they just didn't have the right kind of tone I wanted for distortion sounds is all, and, I can use another cabinet for that, as the Sunn stack is basically meant for use as my bass rig anyhow.

Good luck on getting that Crown!!!
It has nearly the same power specs of my Ashley FTX2000.

This is a newer FTX2000C/M version but it is the same thing,

Ashly FET-2000C Specification Sheet (Page 2 of 2)

That Crown bridged into 8 ohms should be about 800 watts, and knowing the bruteness of Crowns, $200 is a sweet deal.
It would be slim pickin's to DIY something like that for that price!!

Cheers!!!

For some reason I stopped getting email notifications from this thread..

Anyway, gonna take a look at that Crown on Tuesday. It's in a shop here in town, a buddy of mine has seen it. Has had both pots replaced and the knobs are not original. I'm willing to bet I can get it for $150.

In the meantime I picked up an active x-over. Some Canadian mfr. I've never heard of. Got it for next to nothing, but looks to be a pretty well-built unit. Both the hi and lo-pass functions only go down to 50hz, with a 12db rolloff. I want it to go down to 30hz, so I'm considering whether or not I should attempt to modify it. I may just use it for something else if I can't modify it to suit my needs. My question then is: Where is a good resource for DIY filter design? Would like to filter at the line level, not on the output. I'm gonna double the length of my port to get the 18" enclosure down into the 30's, but still want some filtering. Ideas?

I want to put a high pass on the 18 to cut it off below 30hz or so to protect the speaker and to maximize amplifier efficiency. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I'm not sure exactly where I want to cut it off on the lo-pass, but probably around 120hz or so. The active x-over has a range of 50hz to 180hz.

On another note the x-over is from Energy Loudspeakers, Scarborough, Ontario. I have the manual but no schematic. You know of them?
