ok guys seems i'm not gettin any younger, put my dmn back out last night lugging my 50watt valve harp amp into the pub for a new years gig, long story short I need a lighter amp. want around 60 - 80 watts output.
I hav built quite a few valve amps (coz they sound better lol) but hav only a very basic idea on solid state, I do hav quite a few 2n3055's lying around (so they are free) but just looking for sum sugestions for a simple, easy to build amp. a bass amp would be close.
any ideas plz
P.s. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

If you are looking for a real light weight, go for a class-d-PowerModule (TPA3116), fed by some notebook-power-adapter, add a simple ss pre-amp and you are done.
And chose a light weight speaker, for instance jensen/mod series.

cheers for the replly yes am looking into class d as i really no nothing about it. whats its feedback rejection like.
oh and unfortunatlly all rdy hav a speaker was going to be for my next tube project, but i really cant afford another one right now. 75 watts 16ohm and yes its heavier than it could be. but not to extreme.
What's your harp style? Clean like a PA or Chicago style? What type microphone do you use?
Excellent point!
Here is a 1980's Maplin 225WRMS amplifier using 2n3055/mj2955.I do hav quite a few 2n3055's lying around (so they are free) but just looking for sum sugestions for a simple, easy to build amp. a bass amp would be close.

If you are using new transistors I would increase the VAS capacitor a bit as I found I had to do to stop oscillation.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Yes that is a good point, I use a "shaker mad dog" which is a dynamic mic round 600 ohms. playing stlye ranges from clean to grundgey but not as heavy as most would call chicago.
my current amp is roughly fender tweed with mods 6sl7 preamp and pi into 6l6 p/p.
second half of the first 6sl7 is used for overdrive which i use for the grundgey bits. round 50 watts, and a couple of tons lol
There is a variety of cheap ready-built TPA3116-boards on the market. So there is no need to struggle with tiny SMD-components. Supplying such a board with 24V you can expect about 20W undistorted power into 16Ohms and 40W into 8Ohms.
update
Just a quick update, its four months later and my torn back muscles hav healed so...........
Nothing sounds as good as a Fat Valve amp!😀 lol I might put sum wheels on it thou.

I split my Peavey Triumph 120 combo into head and cab when even my son (bass player) refused to carry it 🙂
If you do think about taking the Solid State route, here's one.
He's got a handful of amp designs of varying wattages. This one is 60W into 8 ohms and 90W into 4 ohms.

If you don't want to make your own pcbs/breadboards buy in a ready built and tested amplifier module off ebay.
I use PC cases for amp projects.
I have bought cases with PSU but ripped out the psu guts and used the fan housing and mains socket.

if i can make my 20 watt sound close to my 50/60 watt and chuck a mic in the bottom its only 2/3 the waight and half the size. won't even need the wheels for another 5 or 10 years lol.

Sorry but "Red Circuits" is a **terrible** source of schematics, most of them are very poor (that's an understatement) or plain wrong.
This one does not have (much needed) thermal compensation, so if biased "properly" it will start to overheat on and on until death; if quite underbiased it will not, but then it will have lots of crossover distortion, the kind which sounds like there's dirt inside the speaker or the voice coil is scratching.
I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know...
I don't have much interest in solid state amps myself, but I've come across the site a few times. Just kind of assumed he knew what he was doing, but I guess not.

Here in DIYaudio itself you can find good threads on amps , both in the SS section and in the chipamps one, also some on the Class D one if somebody takes that route.
Best is that you can speak with people actually built them , even post pictures ... or tell the horror stories.

The preamp is a key element in harp amplification. I would suggest a tube preamp - perhaps the same as your current harp amp, with a lightweight class D power section.

thats what i was thinking too but i was also thinking i dont need to go big just enough to act as a monitor and then mic thru front of house.
lets see you dmn geetarists drown me out then

Good idea. Remember, doubling your power only adds 3dB to the loudness, so 20-30 watts should get it done. You really don't need 50 watts.

Home Depot sells hand trucks in the USA starting around $30. Of course a $30 hand truck is not the quality that the UPS man uses, but they work.
Or there's always the LM3886, circuit on page 2: http://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/lm3886
