It sounds like your wood shop teacher just wants you to learn some more techniques, if that's the case you may as well.
Strength wise, wood glue/pva is fine on most MDF constructions, unless it's something very large or seriously load bearing.... but then, why would you use MDF?

F.W.I.W I have many old MDF constructions held together with cheap pound shop PVA in my garage which serve more than adequately as stools/temporary ladders etc, no fancy fittings or anything
