There's been talk of a universal benefit in the US. There's a lot of reasons it won't happen soon.
There is a fundamental shift in demographics happening. It's happened in other countries and is a sign of decay. A large middle class has economic and political clout. In the 60s and 70s politicians knew better than to alienate the middle class because it was certain political suicide. This is not true to nearly the same degree today. The country is divided into groups that argue over ideologies, demographics, religion, etc. The voters no longer present a unified bloc to candidates. We are a divided people (into endless inane factions no less). By allowing ourselves to be divided like this (you know the media loves to fan those flames) we have allowed ourselves to be defeated. It works every time. 😉

Nobody has yet so far considered the mental consequences of so much leisure time. Human beings need to do things otherwise we become depressed and angry and there are many people on this planet. I don't see this working out in any other way besides world war or at the very least civil war.
Work is essential to our lives. Human beings are not designed to not work.
I would suggest a turning back of the clock as it were to a time when people worked little and got a lot of money for it. Working a little bit (part time) is a lot better than working either not at all or full time.
A 50/50 mix of labour workforce between machines and humans is ideal imho. But what do I know I'm just a loungechair typist.

People could invent things to do like learning to play a musical instrument (electric guitar for instance) and/or writing about their depression and anger, other people not so inclined could learn to read or listen, I see the potential as limitless, why should we have to cater for those who need to be told what to do every moment?Nobody has yet so far considered the mental consequences of so much leisure time.
