If the smell is the lamp burning off dust, put a dust shield.
If the smell is electronics that are running hot, add a cooling method.
If the smell is new electronics, just wait
If the smell is optical plastics melting, add a cooling method
If the smell is cooking flies, clean the projector out.

Well now, depending on the roaches, you might want to keep the smell around. Or at least the smoke.
Careful who you invite to watch moveis though. 😉

we ain't got no stinkin' roaches -- we down to stems and seeds
hehe, you guys are hilareous😀
yes, gnats, moths and fruit flies will come in awe of your brilliance.
I once had a problem with small black flies (like gnats) in the house after putting used teabags on my houseplants. They come from the tealeaves! Gasp! Tetley is infested! Solution? leave a CCFL lamp on and they will never sleep. They literally fell out of the air dead tired. I had a little pile of them around the lampbase.
I drink coffee now.

Can it be ozone? Most lamps with high UV content tend to produce ozone, which gives a funny feeling in the head when inhaled.
seeds? why did you have to mention seeds? I have a migraine already then I read that... ugh.
They come : to : the tea.
When I was a kid and had outdoor pets, we had some fleas in the house. A simple flea trap is a small lamp over a large pan of water with dishsoap in it. They jump to get to the lamp, hit the water and fall through because of the reduced surface tension because of the soap and they drown. Gross.

Does duct tape emit an odor when it gets hot? I've got quite a bit of duct tape holding my flashing together, some of it being within an a couple inches of the bulb, and I have a fairly strong smell whenever the projector is on and even if it's off and I'm near it. I originally thought it was MDF sawdust burning on the bulb but I looked and didn't see any signs that the fan had blown dust near the bulb. The roll of tape says 200 deg F but that doesn't mean it won't smell funky at lower temps

I suspect duct tape would have a very funky smell when hot and also a very short service life. Witness the poor long-term performance when used on ducts ( ! ) in hot attics. You are possibly smelling the offgassing of the adhesive as it ages prematurely due to heat.
Yep, sure enough! I just pulled the flashing out and the ducttape nearest the bulb was yellowing and some of it actually melted all the way through
All tape is now gone and replaced with screws, as it should be 😀
