Well, right now the Ushio bulb that many people use is backordered (everywhere) until Feb or March.
Check Atlanticlighting for a good start. Just do a google on Metal Halide 400W bulbs. Be sure to match the bulb with the ballast. MH bulbs have a MH ballast. HPS (high pressure sodium) bulbs have HPS ballasts. There are magnetic and electronic version for both types of bulbs. Don't be afraid to call the company right up and ask them about things. They are more than willing to help. 🙂

so I tried some good ol ebaying! here is what I found as a bulb:

it's around 36 000 lumens! 🙂
Now I'll look for cheap socket/ballast, again, if you have anything to recommend

That's a decent bulb, but the color temp is a bit low on the spectrum at 4K. Ideal is 5.5-5.7K, and the Ushio bulb that a lot of us are using is 5.2K. That Phillips bulb is vastly superior to what you were using though, and nobody has the Ushio in stock right now.
I might have a deal with a fellow diyaudio member for that 'ushio' bulb + ballast kit, but I'd still have no socket...
any ideas where I could get one? at my local hardware store?

A hardware store wouldn't have it, but an electrical supply store would probably. If you can't find one locally you can buy one from atlantalightbulbs.com or find one on ebay.
I bought a reflector from Atlantic lighting will the mogul built in too, i haven't got it yet so I don't know how it will works but maybe you should think about this.
how much for that deal?Whatmo said:I bought a reflector from Atlantic lighting will the mogul built in too, i haven't got it yet so I don't know how it will works but maybe you should think about this.
quite expensive for an oval shapped metal object and some socket,..., if I can find it localy that would save me shipping too.v1d9uy said:i think its like $40 ... but im not sure
Citrusxt,
Do yourself a favor and pull the lcd from the equation for the time being. Make a transparency of a fine black horizontal and vertical lines the size of your 15 inch lcd. Tape this to a piece of glass and use this as your lcd.
Actually do the alingment with no lcd or trasparency in place first.
If you dont see a sharp bulb image at about 32cm from the top fresnel there is no point going any further.
Now check your alignments and distances with this. Remember the bulb arc needs to be centered to the center ring of the fresnels. You should see a reasonably sharp arc image of the bulb at around 30cm from the lcd.
