I am just starting my research on "how to build a LCD projector"

I have seen a few plans that use an overhead projector. Although efficient, it is just something that I don't want to have taking up that much space.

I have seen the "box" type design but am confused on the project.

The LCD screen I have noticed that the light source is behind it. On one site I saw a picture of a electronic board behind it. How does light pass through? Or, do you remove the screen from the board as well?

I suppose that if I want to watch TV I can hook up my VCR to it and use the VCR as a tuner, correct? Or are there any that have a tuner built in?

The LCD's are very confusing. But I am pretty sure that the higher the pixel amount the better?

Is there a source that I can use to find a good LCD screen? Ebay is great source for buying these but not finding the one you want.

I would like to make a standard box, but Carbon Fiber though. (it is readilly available to me) Not to mention that it is so light.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I did read the FAQ's and still had some questions. I just learned about this this AM.

Carbon Fiber. That's awesome. I wish I knew how to use that stuff.

Anyways, LCD panels are pretty complicated. You really need to do some research. Just read the forums. I know they're long, and there's a bunch of conversational posts making it a lot longer, but it's where all the info is at. To answer your question, yes, you need to remove the backlight and seperate the electronic boards from the back of the panel to make it transparent. Some are easy, and some are very hard. Some might even be impossible. In many cases, there is a very short ribbon cable preventing you from moving the back components off to the side. There are resourses on where to buy longer ones, and how to extend them. It's complicated stuff if your not used to working w/ electronics.

The only way your going to find a panel w/ a TV tuner is if you get it from a portable TV. And that means that the resolution will be so low that it's not even worth it. LCD panels are dumb. It's the controller card that does everything and has all of the inputs on it. There are controller that have video inputs (none w/ tuners) but the majority accept a computer VGA input. Using video inputs would mean you'd definately want a line doubler, and unless you find a controller w/ component inputs (which you probably won't) your DVD's won't look as good. Not only that, but you'd have to buy an expensive progressive-scan DVD player to get the benefits of it. My advice to you would be to buy a projection panel (most have video inputs) for an overhead projector.
