The first thing I recall building from scratch used a carbon microphone, some batteries and a speaker I scrounged from a discarded "All American 5" radio.
Not audio, but me and a friend built a still using some of the equipment (flask, hoses, glass tubing) one of my uncles had from college. It did make alcohol but we didn't taste. Those were the days when you could get a "chemistry set" from Gilbert or Porter Scientific which had really nasty stuff.

oh... those drivers weren't bad for their time.Recently tested and destroyed these Philips kit speakers, built in 1973-4 era. Closed box, used in room corner. The xo has a coil for the woofer but mid and tweeter are not attenuated enough to match BSC.
Receiver-amp was Salora 2000 and first cassette deck was a Sony.

I've several stored in the attic 🙂 and when I am old and gray I intend to bust them out for fun and loves.
1974: A for those days state off the art HiFi installation with:
Thorens TD160 turntable, still in use today.
A Kenwood receiver, used for 30 years.
3-way speakers, Philips DIY kit with 10 inch woofer, first order crossover filters, in closed box. Used until a few years back.

In 1968 a Millard 10 watt ECC83/EL84 amplifier I think from from practical wireless. I also copied my dad's Pioneer CS40 loudspeakers using Calrad dual concentric 8"drivers. The source was a Gerrard turntable with Pickering crystal pick-up. I had one record, Indian Giver. When everyone in the house was sick of Indian Giver, my dad bought me Tommy James and the Shondells - Crimson and Clover. I then fixed an old (trans)portable Telefunken reel tape given me by my uncle and taped my music mixes off the local radio. Killing me softly by Roberta Flack was a favourite on the top 20.
A Heathkit VTVM (Vacuum Tube Voltmeter) and a Heathkit shortwave radio, both around 1968-1970. Heathkits were a great way to get into electronics and audio.
A Knight Kit C100 walkie-talkie. No sig gen in the house. Put in a CH14 crystal and dialed it in while my brother used the family CB radio making test counts. Got on my bicycle and rode to about 1/2 mile, stopping to tune. along the way. It was able to bring in the trucker traffic on the interstate ~5 miles away.
