Hi guys,
I'm turning 50 and I have a present to choose 🙂
I have a limited amount of electronics knowledge in so far as, I've successfully built several Seventh Circle Audio pre amp kits for recording, but the instructions were great and if something had gone wrong, I wouldn't really know where to start.
I'm looking for advice on this: Hifi DIY Kits Class A Single End EL34 Tube Integrated Amplifier Vintage Tube AMP | eBay
It's at the top end of my price range and looks easy enough to build. Does anyone here have anything to say about these?
Also, I'm using a Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100 with Tannoy Eclipse 3's and a Sony amp with a dodgy volume knob. I notice the tube amp on ebay is 12w per channel and my speakers are 8w. Would this be a problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Alex.

I have had a decent number of low cost Chinese kits and amps roll through my workshop in the last couple of years. For anything at this price point, you can expect the actual power you get to be about half of what's advertised. You will not get 20Hz-28kHz bandwidth. I wouldn't expect that amp to do more than about 40Hz-18kHz at 5W.
As far as instructions go, I've seen as little as a single drawing to act as a guide.
You should also observe that they are not showing you what's under those output transformer covers. There may be a good reason for that.
Things aren't so grim if you look for a push-pull kit instead.

Thanks very much for your help. Would you be able to suggest something specific? I'm looking at around the €300 mark and would like to build a kit.
Something like this will suck less:
HiFi Class AB Tube Power Amplifier DIY Kit Push-pull Stereo Audio Amp 12W+12W | eBay
I would still throw all the electrolytic caps in the garbage that it comes with, as they are frequently counterfeit parts.

Thanks so much for your help and advice I really appreciate it. They don't ship to Ireland unfortunately, but at least I know what to look for now. Cheers!

From the pictures it is 6N9S (=6SL7), both halves in parallel, driving self-biased EL34 in ultralinear mode, no NFB.
Not spectacular, but not that bad actually - might sound decent and has some room for future mods.
I would replace the electrolytic caps with something decent too.
Eclipse 3's are 60W.

Your speakers are 8 Ohm, not 8W 😀I notice the tube amp on ebay is 12w per channel and my speakers are 8w. Would this be a problem?
