That's a new one for me! What does the current research about orienting the amp says? Will a layer of u-metal nullify the effects of the earth?

If you mean mu metal alloy, yes. We used to use a mu-metal vacuum chamber for XPS work for exactly that reason. Electromag field coils could also be used around a test chamber to provide local cancellation (with CAREFUL adjustment), but they were a nuisance to work with. Never heard of mu-metal used in hifi, except as shielding for to prevent a trafo's mag field from interacting with the rest of the electronics.
