Gentlemen, may I suggest a little restraint unti A'af can get home and look at the problem. By all means report faulty components here, but don't get carried away before the situation is clarified.

This for starters: http://www.fbi.gov/majcases/fraud/internetschemes.htm
Google "internet fraud report".
I think we should do what Pinkmouse suggested. After all, A'af did come forward to explain that he will contact his supplier. And because most companies are closed till after new year, there's nothing much he can do for now.
Believe me, i'm as worried as the rest of you. After all 255$ is no joke to risk loosing after two years on sick-pay, but it's a bad idea with a hanging party, before there has been a trial.
Happy new year, and cross your fingers for a reasonal solution.

I cracked one 2sk389 open and there seems to be nothing inside but the leads - the stamps on the enevelope are worth more than the the non-jfets in it

Please don't do that

Just because they are not what they pretend to be, do not mean they are worthless.
I just measured mine, and all these K389/J109 were dual NPN BJT transistors. In one sample I measured hfe 525 for both side with one of multimeter, and 552 with another. AFAIK, these uniquely shaped dual BJT should be Japanese transistors, intended as differential pairs for preamp or poweramp. They should still worth something to someone, but certainly not with fake labels on them

This reminds me of an old story. Some friends once visited a glorious eastern european country. They managed to get a really sweet deal on the exchange rate from a well dressed guy at the airport. Once at the hotel they found out the cheap notes were from another country altogether, obviously one with a thousand times bigger denominations. For two days they refused to admit they've been had and tried convincing each other they just got the wrong package 🙂
Was John Curl not a bit sceptical about this GB?
I have 2SC3381 and 2SA1349 dual transistor devices in the same 7 pin package as the 2SK389/2SJ109 - maybe that was what was substituted / relabeled ??

Yes, that was my suggestion too, but as I write, there is no difference on the J and K - npn all of them. Not all that fun with old bjts with new labels... 🙁
if all devices are NPN they might be 2SC3381 (NPN) if they are even that - the leads look odd - in any case, useless to most, if not all of us - whatever thay are

The irony is that this K389/J109 mess kick-started my Dynafet project, so I was also looking for the 2SC3381/2SA1349 pairs for the project. From the hfe value I measured, I suspect I have got 20 pieces of 2SC3381BL but not a single pieces of the PNP counterpart, where should I look for the 2SA1349BL now?

OK. Does this mean we can count on your (moderators') assistance in resolving the situation in our best interests (e.g. getting our money back)? This may be importrant information for those who still have a chance to get the PayPal chargeback process going on.

No. It's just a suggestion. You can do what seems best to you.

I can only second this!
My parts have not yet been sended out (upon my request, because one of the German members here is currently or have been in Jakarta since already a month or so and we agreed that he pick up my parts in person, if possible) so I have not seen one and therefore can not comment.
I was shocked and very concerned when I read all the posts about used, defective, relabeled or empty parts, since I have invested a very noticable amount (at least for me it is) in these little critters (almost 150 parts in total, You do the math ...) and I have to work hard for my money just as most of You guys.
Since "A'af" has shown up immediately and also instantly responded to my very concerned email yesterday in which he explained that he will take responsibility for this, I feel much more comfortable now.
Just think of it, if "A'af" would have the intention to rest his case he simply would not have shown up anymore.
He is a member here since year 2001 and apparently also has sold tons of other rare or obsolete electronic audio parts during that time. As it seems, always to the satisfaction of his worldwide customers otherwise someone would have complained long ago.
Although he deals with electronic components (as a side job) it appears that despite this he has not much experience with electronics (he even did not know what this Dual-JFETs are for at all, I had to tell him). This might explain why he has been fooled this time. What concerns his previous sales I assume he simply had luck and always bought the real things. What I don`t quite understand though is that he wasn`t suspicous about this really bad and unsual appearance of the parts but maybe there is a reasonable explanation for this as well.
I`m as sad as all You are about this very unfortunate situation but I can only appeal to all those which are concerned to calm down, not to freak out (yet) and to wait until "A'af" had time to clear and to explain the situation.
At the moment anything else will (IMO) not be helpful in any way to get this sorted out in a "reasonable" manner, whatever this is supposed to be. That "A'af" needs some days time for this only sounds reasonable to me.
For my part I`ll keep quiet until "A'af" comes back to us in a week or so and until I hear what he has to say.
So until next year and that it begins better than it ended

I will wait for the last moment before asking Paypal to chargeback my account. That makes little time.
I hope this will not be a bad experience with a DIYaudio seller. Until now, I was very pleased and it was with confidence that I played along for this GB, although a 1000 pieces lot was very very suspect. I'm just really concerned because some friends followed me. I don't mind being someone's fool, but hate being the trigger of others foolness.
Wait and see and seasons greetings to all.
I used to be optimistic, let's go on!

I too will wait to see if A'af can resolve this before I go the Paypal claims route.
To everyone please stop breaking open you devices. If A'af just happens to be a man of his word he may request that the devices be sent back to him so that he can get this problem resolve with his supplier.
Just can understand why people do such silly things. Generally if you want an exchange or refund you do dismantle something before you return it. Just have to wait until the 5th to see what happens.
Give the guy a chance to resolve this
Dan.

Cocolino, please read the following thread:
Hello Milan,
I have no time to read through the 8 pages of this thread in detail.
From what I grasped at a quick glance is that it deals about fraud and buyers of a group buy who waited too long to take action.
Point taken, but this has not anything to do with A'af.
Not yet.
This thread You linked is an example of one extreme but to take action in case of A'af already right now, without letting him some reasonable time (I mean "some" and "reasonable", not endless) to resolve this when he already immediately indicated his willing to do so, would be an extrem also.
I just don`t see anything what speaks against waiting some days more, unless in cases of members who paid with PayPal and in which time is running out to file a claim for a chargeback.
I did not pay via PayPal and I don`t know what I would do in the case if I`d have and if time gets short. All I know is I`d wait until the last possible moment.
I`m not here to defense or to accuse anybody, just trying to keep "objective" and to explain how I see the case from my perspective and what I would hope how others would treat me if something like this would have happened to me (what a horrible vison).
AmenGive the guy a chance to resolve this
