ah, the good ol´ days

Hi StefanK,

Ah, nostalgia =) I rembered the LA1231, a fine woofer! Used it myself in lots of subs during my youth. Don't know if it was actually made here or in somewhere in the old east block, Hungary maybe?

Unfortunatly I haven't come across the alnico version in many years. If you do find a pair they've probably taken a fair share of beating and may need some re- magnetization. Asking around could perhaps be worth the effort? Why not give the guys at hifi-kit a buzz, after all they used to sell them, and also they're usually quite helpful.

Anyhow, good luck!

Yes, you are probably right Ion and John. I spoke yesterday with Hifi Kit. A new guy, but he was in doubt they are Alnico. The six I bought in the eighties were all Alnico but they must have been rest of old Alnico production. Hmm, wonder if my old school friend still have four of these.

Ion, you are right! Tons of water!

Stand corrected!

this is clearly not an alnico magnet on this one, just standard ceramic.

Its not the driver in question

I also doubt the Gamma is still with Alnico
I remember some 30years ago when I bought a replacement driver, and it had plastic chassis, very unlike the original...I hope and expect they have improved since then

btw, at the time I knew nothing about any alnico...not many did, they just bought the "Gamma Monitor" kit because it was good...funny that they still sell the mid driver too
I can only imagine the improvements that could be made with todays modern tools fore speaker/xo design

Oh yes, the original "Gamma-Monitor" was a rather small BR design, and this new Gamma woofer obviously need a big closed box...so I expect something has been changed, maybe fore the good

This is the driver...cone does look very "Altec-like", doesnt it 😉

btw, this is the midrange...I always thought it was a rather funny fellow

Tweeter was a copy of the famous hornloaded DECCA ribbon...sounded good but was very fragile and most blew them eventually

according to wikipedia alnico is a special kind of magnet material
of Aluminium + Nickel + Cobolt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alnico
Alnico is an acronym[1] referring to alloys which are composed
primarily of aluminium (symbol Al), nickel (symbol Ni) and cobalt (symbol Co), hence al-ni-co,
with the addition of iron, copper, and sometimes titanium,
typically 8-12% Al, 15-26% Ni, 5-24% Co, up to 6% Cu, up to 1% Ti, rest is Fe.
The primary use of alnico alloys is magnet applications.

Of the more commonly available magnets,
only rare-earth magnets such as neodymium and samarium-cobalt are stronger.

Strange, the ones I had were cast chassies. They had plastic covers over magnet thou. They had very good mids for a 12 inch, disregard the beaming. The ribbon existed in two versions, VLD12 and 13. Today I think only VLD13 is still in production, but not sure. They sounded real good these ribbons, as I remember.

Maybe someone has the original link to the Bulgarian manufacturer. Wysskoff something....

Hello
I'm using the original ones of these subs in my pair of the original Orion HS-500
In hungary the original VKN lows were placed into the HS 500/501/511/700 series produced by the manufacturer Orion TV&Radio in the early and mid 80's
They were named the same as the present's GAMMAs: LA-1231
