Holographic realism? Really?
I wonder if the actually perform the function of a fuse?
You seem to be a part swapper. There are also inductors and resistors and various ways to build various linear or shunt regulators.
There are also ways to build really good filters without capacitors.
Starting with a transformer there are different impedances and DC resistances of the windings to consider. You can choose to use full wave or bridge rectification. You can use choke input or capacitor input filters, heck even an inductor on the transformer primary works!
When we are beyond the grade school level actual design can happen and interaction of the chosen transformer values with the chosen diodes can be optimized. Then we can look at the time constants of the filter stages and check what our dominant poles are. Check the power supply impedance against frequency. And it goes on and on.
So much about "just ... the transformer, the rectifier, and the filtering caps"
I am quite curious about the transformer impedance, what kind of specs to you actually look at that manufacturers provide? Or is this a guess-buy miss thing?
So if a guitarist plugs his cable in the wrong way around during recording, when you listen to it will you need to reverse the direction of your speaker cables?
Cable direction cannot be compensated for in other places. But then mics can be made with the wrong polarity...
And shouldn't it be different in the Southern Hemisphere? What direction should the signal travel on a PCB?
Ah, the peace of the forum. This evening I have been discovering that Modern double din car stereos are not built to be taken apart. The power amp module has gone on the sprog transportation unit so thought would take it out see what the part was and see if I can get replacements. Bad move. It's one of these units with CD and DVD drives and a motorised screen on the front. And the broken bit is under the two drives and above the motors for the screen. Manufacture must have been exceedingly labour intensive. So we are going stereo shopping tomorrow. I hate to admit defeat but sometimes reading fox in sox with my son is more valuable.
Anyhoo back on track. For the cable swapping brigade I have never understood why they keep trying to invent boogeymen before they have addressed the basics. You know simple things like snubbing diodes, having electrostatic screens on toroids, making sure the PE connection is in exactly the right place (a cm can matter here). There are so many things that are sound engineering that can make a real measured difference to the crud on the power supply but these never seem to be addressed before reaching for the flooby. In some cases it might even result in audible improvements, at least if the starting point was a really bad power supply feeding a circuit with the low PSRR design of the day.

The situation is, current is being drawn interactively with the music, if this interaction is not fully isolated from the mains, then the difference occurs. In reality, it is not possible to obtain total isolation, sometimes in testing through EMI this is obvious, but to various degrees of magnitude.
I never really thought about an amp modulating the wall power. My tube amp is a steady 200 watt draw, maybe I like its sound better because its not a widely varying current draw, upon the house power.
Still awaiting a balanced isolation power transformer, to hear if it improves either the tubes, or my TV. Perhaps I should have put some wooden blocks inside the amps instead, but it gets hot in there.

Of course.
Read The Holographic Universe, authored by Michael Talbot.
What direction should the signal travel on a PCB?
If John Wheeler and Richard Feynman have it right, there is no direction, because the mono electron is in all places, at all times.

Try a range of power rating incandescent lamps plugged into your power strip or into somewhere else on the same branch/circuit.
Yes, IME screened isolation transformers make a nice difference.Still awaiting a balanced isolation power transformer, to hear if it improves either the tubes, or my TV. Perhaps I should have put some wooden blocks inside the amps instead, but it gets hot in there.
I built a multi output box with iso transformers supplied via an uber HD filter module pcb pulled from a split system aircon outdoor unit....same schematic as the standard enclosed type filters but several kW rated.
The screen wire connection was movable between choice of earth points...direct to wall socket or filter pcb earth point.
I also fitted phase reversing switches in series with the primaries and the secondaries.
There you go, there's suggestions a bunch of permutations for you to try.
Dan.

I was hoping one of the believers in cable directivity would have enlightened me as once the signal leaves the cable, what does it do... if its so critical what about low level signals, on pre-amp boards and digital, how do we read data in and out of memory down the same tracks, we live in a chaotic world of scrambled signals being massacred by micro diodes, crystal boundaries and Maxwell demons! All that stand between us and total signal genocide are the stalwart troops of Pacific 1711 Squadron sheathed in cloaks of invincible ERS to destroy the demons and restore peace and calmness to the traumatised electrons and restore purity to the signals...
Or maybe a MMMC...
