The problem with SMPS is longitudinal coupling...ie parasitic coupling/injection of HF noise into system earths and consequent noise currents on signal cable earth/shield conductors.
In unbalanced systems this gets translated to noise audio signal.
Typically inadequate output smoothing also results in HF noise on power rails.

Actually not if they are done correctly.....
Even put two on a board in a headshell for headphones with the rest of the circuitry, quiet as a mouse.... Powering all analogue circuitry.
Its electromagnetic compatibility engineering, now I can understand how it can be a problem with some audio especially DIY because there is a trend to do things differently🙂
It is a shame that mainly because of low cost PC power supplies (that work adequately for the job they are doing) that some audiophile hold the unerring belief that SMPS is bad, Linear is good (noise at 50-60Hz Sir) this is not true and is a generalisation....
And further some Chap on here is working on a super filter I believe that should help solve the problem when He releases the details!!!!!

And further to my last reply, why worry about a bit of noise from an SMPS on the mains when power line communication will swamp any noise as it is adding EMC noise directly into the mains.........🙁

😀 ... people constantly trip over their own feet, in thinking that this type of "electrical noise" is something that they can hear, clearly differentiated, through their speakers. Like hiss, or pops and crackles. Well, guess what ... that ain't the way it works ... 😉.
The usual manifestation of electrical noise causing problems is that the sound goes flat, or "deadens" - live music has a sparkle, "oomph" to it - and this is what evaporates in audio reproduction when too much noise interference gets into the game. Boring, "I can't be bothered listening to this" sound is what ones gets with excess electrically originating artifacts - you can't say exactly why, but your enthusiasm for wanting to keep listening goes down the gurgler - the sound has lost its "mojo" ...

Yep, luck plays a large part in getting involving sound - the headaches begin when something changes, and you don't know what it was, but the system doesn't perform as well - you can go nuts trying to understand what's going on. Far better to fully understand, everything that matters - you're fully in control, at all times ...
Where I go about things differently, is that I would completely ignore the live albums that get the thumbs up - and totally focus on those "dud" recordings. What are they telling me, what clues do they give as to where the system can be improved - all efforts go into bringing that music to life ... and when that happens, both they and the favourite albums "work" ... 😉
