I attended a 3D print convention earlier this week. One of the stands was by a company that restores vintage cars, by printing copies of original parts. A niche market, same as your fossil DAC.

The important parts of vintage cars are made with lathes, mills and english wheels by old boys called Bert who smell of castrol R. No place for 3D printing in their world 😛

3D printing is a useful step to making sand castings

I can think up half a dozen far more important advantages, same for surface mount devices.

I know that, I have been using smd parts in RF designs for decades because I need the much better lead inductance and the small pcb
I was making the point that even the legacy NOS fans would benefit from smd 😉

Take a TDA1541 DAC. Many claim that the 2x7 rows of 100nF reference decoupling capacitors should be increased.
Something like 1uF X6R 0603 smd capacitors would allow higher value really close to the pins.

I'm sure that the world is full of internet eggspurts that both affirm, contradict, and question that idea.

You would not believe what that article unearths. There is a throw away line in there about some testing by 'Acuity'. So I dug. On the Nordost site there is this
