actually, I do have some single mode fibre GigE cards lying around. No crystals at all to mar the sound. Just need to find someone who will wrap fibres in finest hand fed worm silk.

In most industry's, pandering to a lunatic fringe would be considered a waste of time, not in audio though. Here it seems to reap massive rewards.

On an OT, singing bowls are about as good a way of highlighting system issues as anything - have a CD of these played by a decent practitioner, plus a real one, nice piece of shiny brass, in-house - not used for audio purposes, whatsoever! The genuine article creates an intense tone that cuts like a knife through your skull, it's all those higher harmonics going full chat - playing back the recording, a typical dud setup outputs a dull, dead grinding that makes no acoustic sense at all - what's this crap supposed to be, a casual listener would be prompted to say.
