whenever I run into stuff like that, I can't help but wonder: how come those folks manage to have any trust in science at all? two bit-identical files sound different (no one knows why) but the same folks fly airplanes. which, I would dare to say, are a bit more complex that the CD ripping process is and are at least partially built based on 'incorrect' assumptions such as bits are bits 🙂IIRC, there was a rather heated discussion about that here a couple of years ago. They went so far as to upload the files to an internet server so other folks could download them and judge for themselves. Sure enough the true believers still heard a difference. Oddly enough, renaming the files in an attempt to do some sort of blind test affected the sound quality of both files so badly that it was no longer possible to tell which was which.
fluffer
A position as senior project consultant for rigidity management of silicone wouldn't look half bad on your résumé.
I was part of that, it was quite puzzling. How could the 2 files, which are identical to the very last bit, sound different? Seems impossible, right?IIRC, there was a rather heated discussion about that here a couple of years ago. Yes, it was impossible. Of course I did hear differences, I could play the same file 4 times and hear differences, that's how the mind works. But there was no way to identify the files in a blind test. None.
Funny how identical identical actually is. 🙂

But knowing that, how can you even engage with someone who claims that such-and-such a tweak made a "night and day" improvement to the sound? Or that valve sounds like this, solid state like that. Or digital is "brittle" while vinyl is fluid etc. etc. Unlike them, you have proven to yourself that any such claim is really not worth the pixels it's written in. Yet 80% of the content of these forums must be variations on those sorts of claims. Are you just being polite? 🙂
we have several members here who believe in this, based on that test, I christened the differences 'dark bits' the 'differences' are often ascribed to the different sub-atomic/quantum state of the playback device, so that indeed not only can you play back the very same file several times and hear differences, these people believe that there ARE clearly audible differences based on the electrical conditions/ noise, etc being different at the time of each playback and these differences impose themselves on the playback. of course there is special software that helps mitigate such insidious errors.
I find it quite hilarious
these errors are not due to clocking, are immune to buffering, pass straight through error correction, because they are supposedly based on random electrical interference, phenomena, different memory cells, different patterns caused by playback media, thew operating system etc etc.
its fully down the rabbit-hole
as described it would seem to be unavoidable, but there is a whole range of products and services 'designed' to alleviate the 'problems'. the nature of the issues means its not possible to measure them... checksums dont catch it because the data is identical

I would agree. Instead of wasting my life in research, I should have been a fluffer for lesbian porn.
It could have given new meaning to the concept of blind AB testing.

or
...
but, somehow, a very select group of enlightened people, who somehow don't work for NASA or in the latest cutting-edge secret military research, are aware of those problems and their fixes.
guess audiophiles are lucky.
right.

Does the Illinois Tool Works have a calender like Ridgid Tool does?
RIDGID Calendar - RIDGID Professional Tools
some of them apparently used to work at NASA, NSA, etc. but found their true calling in Audio; afterall thats where all the groundbreaking science is happening. New discoveries and their acronyms are put into action every year.

Sorry, all positions are filled.Instead of wasting my life in research, I should have...
I was about to blame the snake oil merchants for not doing their homework, when I did some Googling, just to make sure I was not pointing the finger in the wrong direction.
In that process, I stumbled across this link Researchers Use Quantum Entanglement to Create Wireless, ?Invisible? Speakers | Home Theater, and found out that some jerk has already used it for a 1st of April joke. I am appalled by such a complete disregard for the money earning potential offered by the application of this advanced scientific concept to audio marketing.
On a more serious note: it is a well known fact that the laws of electronics from Ampere to Ohm are only valid on the assumption that all electrons are equal and devoid of individuality. However, contrary to the human species, where entanglement betweem two examplars typically leads to a loss of individuality, electrons gain such by mutual entanglement. This is bad for audio, where it leads to a lack of air and oomph and an increase in graininess. My interconnects/cables/purifiers/AC-filters/power cords have all built in quantum disentanglers to restore the electrons to their pristine state, removing this resilient source of audio degradation.

Talk about a long work day. Not to mention the sore jaw.
John
You don't want to use "pristine" (i.e. bare) electrons. With the usual cloud of vacuum virtual particles removed they will have a different mass from normal mucky electrons, so your circuits would need to be redesigned.
However, I can offer you new circuits designed to cope with bare electrons. These use sophisticated techniques developed during secret military research into reducing the weight of soldiers' backpacks. By using bare electrons and these new circuits the average squaddy has 10% less to carry, thus improving his fighting ability.
While improving audio fidelity, these new arrangements make all the items lighter so more prone to microphony. To combat this I can also sell you a set of Higgs bosun to place on top of each item. The Higgs bosun is an exact scale model of a Scottish trawlerman, handmade from finest bone china. It adds just the right amount of weight.

And worse: 2 files are definitely different, because one has had significant DSP applied ... sound different at first, but sound more and more alike, the more you AB them - the mind gets sick of doing boring things ... 🙂I was part of that, it was quite puzzling. It's tough, but in the end, rewarding.
45 years of playing flute has developed the relevant muscles to fine-tuned perfection.
How 'bout some fresh snake oil, everyone? A member of the forum went to this year's LSAF a week ago in Dallas. I called him this week to see how it all went down.
He walked into a room, with one fellow having a screwdriver in hand. Apparently, the guy was tweaking his system by turning all the outlet face plate screws to horizontal position to improve the sound.
Research paper coming......just wait here a while...

Wouldnt the Higgs Field theoretically allow me to tweak your audio system while on the other side of the world, simply by waving my hands?
what a goldmine!
what a goldmine!
another thing which contradicts all my real-life experiences (not a funny one this time): good speakers are not just sums of their parts, as in a finely-tuned speaker with so-so drivers can sound good while good drivers don't guarantee good sound. all my experiences are at the exact opposite.
