Hi.

Been thinking about this for a few days. I would like some input on the general idea and input on driver-selection.

I'm not going for super-hifi, but for an alternative speaker that cheap to make.

The Idea is to use a cardboard-tube for cabinet. The dimensions would like 18 cm diameter and height about 1.20-1.60m. Thickness would have to min 10mm.

I would probably use 4 (or 5) 4" or 5" bass/mid-range/full-range units and a tweeter. If I go all the way, it should bed an active speaker as I have most components to do 6 amp-channels.

I have a lot (10-12) old full-range Philips units and I might use them for a first try. They a crappy looking and only 12W a piece, but it might just work.

So, any ideas on the driver selection before i decide to make this or not? Whats the price for 10 4" units with acceptable data?

Here's a quick drawing shoving the idea.

Any inputs?

Hi Dave.

I haven't gotten the detail figured out yet. Right now it's only a feasibility-study... If I'm gonna´ make an active system I might as well go all the way and make it a 3 way... Don't know. I have to think about getting the most "volume" out of the small units...

I'll try to find some data on the Philips units.

As I remember they are approx 5", 12W and with a paper-diaphragm. Voice-coil looks to be aluminium or perhaps copper. VC-diameter is approx 15mm.

Have you got any links to info about these old Philips-units?

Hi.

Planet10: "I don't see many of the eared Philips but they are quite nice." - So I might get a a good result from these?

Have you got any experience with those Philips units? Datasheets? Sound? As far as I remember, I've seen a datasheet with a RMS-rating of 12W. That's ~ 50W RMS with 4 units... That's not a lot... Any idea of the sensitivity?
