CSS had a crossover worked out for these very drivers, didn't they? 😕
Just a simple XO, a single cap to bring the tweeter in above the FR. I would suggest starting with the tweeter disconnected.

Got the Mar-Kel70 up and running today.
Well, well I must say I was surprised by how they played - the bass weight and quality was very impressive indeed for a 4" driver in a bookshelf cabinet. Quality of midrange also very satisfactory coupled with decent highs - not as extended as the Alp 7.3, the champ in the MA camp for mid and highs. However, it sounded like they would be more forgiving of bad recordings vs the Alpair.
I had Banglacx come over for a listen and he took them back to do a head to head comparison with the Mar-Ken7.3 he has. And btw, you know a speaker sounds good when somebody wants to take them away so soon. 🙂

All seems well with this then, any comments on the cab design before I decide to get going, or any thoughts of the idea to make them active?
I currently own no AV kit. The design is really about making a small footprint full range speaker to make the TV listenable to. Owning no AV kit at all, making them active seems like a solution that could make them even easier to implement as well as possibly being cheaper than a stand alone amp, just need a DAC to send them a signal from what ever sources I wanna throw at them. Looking to get as good a quality from them as is realistically possible.
Any thoughts, or amp solutions should going active be worthwhile.

Yes it's a good idea considering. Make sure your TV has a variable output on the RCA's and that you can shut the TV speaker off without affecting the RCA outs. If not you will need a remote control for the plate amps. One that works on both at once.

You need to start owning AV kit again Dan.
If you are talking about active between the EL70 and the tweeter you probably don't need, then it is probably not a good idea. KISS. A single cap of sufficiently small size should be more transparent.

Ya, don't bother with active. Multiple amps, cables, a cross over box... Passive is the most convenient.
Sorry for the confusion guys, I didnt mean adding in active crossovers, I meant making the speakers into active speakers by sourcing some small amps that could be mounted into the speaker cabinet. They only need 10 watts or so, so I'm thinking there must be some sort of micro amp that might be worth experimenting with.
You mean make them powered speakers?
The inside of a speaker boxes is a bad environment for an amplifier. Also resistricts upgrade possibilities.

Hmm, ok. Could I make the amp section sealed of from the speaker volume? Also, I'm not sure where I could go in relation to a future upgrade on these, its not something Ive thought about to be honest. Given the fairly simple use they will be intended for though, I dont think that would be any sort of a concern. I suppose its no hassle though to buy a compact amp and dac, or just a simple integrated amp.
2.1 system Amp and DAC together:
Hifimediy DDX320v2 2.1 Digital Amplifier
Pretty flexible with type of inputs it can take, comes with remote control, and adjustable XO frequency for the sub.
