Re: LE8

There are many versions of this driver. The ones you show with the aquaplas coated one (white) are LE8T-H, which is a ceramic motor with a copper shorting ring. It's about 90dB and has a +/-4mm xmax underhung.

The Alnico version used a silver shorting ring, LE8T. There was also, I believe, the LE8 which is what you're showing with the whizzer.

The AlNiCo version I have is the best midrange I can think of hearing. Missing a lot at frequency extremes, but performs extroardinarily well within the appropriate (100-5k) bandwidth. I have a pair of the ceramics that need recones but am not overanxious.

The yellow surrounds were a material called "lansalloy", which was just their own lighweight rubber formulation. The nice thing about these was that it was integral to the cone assembly.

If you come across them and they've stiffened, DOT3 (IIRC, google first) brake fluid can restore some flexibility until such time as a full-on refoam is required.

How would that work on these? 😉

gack! All those 755s are torture to someone who had his stolen before he even knew what they were.

Anyway, I'm thinking of adding a few pics of internal Macintosh speakers from a few old Macs I'm refurbishing.

Some little speakers to go with the big monsters shown so far.

Pic taken

from left to right

two variations of the speaker used in the flat Centris, the top is the less common Quadtronics, the bottom is the more common Regal with the fancier dust cap. the two large ovals are the same, one is flipped to show the mount. They are Regals from the Mac IIcx, Mac IIci, IIx, and used in the once mighty Quadra 700.The speaker/box assembly propped up on one of the ovals are from the Performa 630, as well as the PowerPC models that use the same body style. next to the Centris speakers, below the ovals, another Regal, is a slighty deeper and heavier built version of the Centris type used in the Quadra 600, . Next to it is the LC series Speaker, though its the standard 2 inch design, it feels heavier and seems to be a well made version of the common 2 incher. Next to it is the speaker/ LED assembly from the Mac IIsi, speaker is a regal.

The Ovals are the best sounding, and the Quadra 700's startup tone really demonstrated that the Quadra 700 had a good sized speaker in it. The Centris speakers work, and sound ok for what they are, but both Centris computers were too far gone to get working, so I don't know how they sounded in the computer. The LC speaker is quite surprising, It sounds a bit better than the run of the mill 2 incher, I guess the extra weight and nicer build quality showed you can improve the design some. The LC computer itself can really squeeze some descent sound out of it without distortion. The IIsi speaker is kinda soft sounding, doesn't get really loud in the IIsi. The P630/PowerPC speaker/box assembly is kinda another dud, though It makes a good tester, and It might be good for a Model Railroad sound module speaker.

I looked at the picture 1st and recognized all of those. I have 10s of drivers pulled from Macs. The best ones are from the AV monitors, followed by the JBL 1" in the slot load iMacs, and the Crystal Spheres (early ones with JBLs -- don't know that the newer Fosters are as good). If you need anything else to make pairs or do a restore (and it is worth the post to you) send me a mail. I may have Mac parts too... i've junked or given most everything away before the G3s but still have some stuff kicking around)

My AVs are dry rotted, the surrounds might not survive more than a hour of music. Another good driver is the ones from the Apple Design Powered Speakers, unfortunately, I had to watch 4 of the 7 I have slowly tear them selves apart, again due to dry rotted surrounds. They sounded beautiful until the foam started to flap, causing a buzzing sound. I have 3 left, and my spare it seems is starting to go as well. I have two of the non-amplified side speakers hooked up to the Small Realistic 5-watt/channel amp with the matching Tuner as my computer shop system. Hopefully they hold up and not dry rot on me.It would be nice if they made Rubber Surround Kits for these drivers.

The Speaker inside the PowerMac 6500 tower sounds interesting. Its in a huge black waveguide looking thing and the Mac switches it to Subwoofer mode when external speakers are plugged in. However, my PM 6500, though in rough shape, can be brought back to life, so there are no plans to scrap it for parts.

These speakers in the pic were pulled from dead Macs and will more than likely go to the Macs that can be rebuilt. The Centris Speakers will probably go in a shortwave radio project, or I might give them to my friend to use in Model Railroad sound modules.

I might give my Mac IIfx one of the ovals If I can't get one of the two Mac IIci's going again. The IIfx huge, yet it has a Apple IIgs type speaker thats as soft as the Mac IIsi speaker.

One I get some money coming in again, I'll take you up on that offer.

^ The computer or the speaker assembly? I've actually made some pretty formidable computers out of the PM 6500s. They're not G3's, but they have a fairly high upper limit on ram, and can run OS 9 quite well. One guy I rebuilt one for is still using it as his primary computer. It was the 300mhz version that I outfitted with a 20gig hd , 192mb ram, and Mac OS 9.

If I had the money, I'd buy one off of ya.

Apple AV Monitor Speaker and a Driver from the Apple Design Powered Speakers.

The A/V driver is the smaller one. You can see where a hole in the surround has formed on the Apple Design driver( the larger one). I'm going to try to perform an experimental repair on the Apple Design driver to keep it from disintegrating.

edit: the Apple Design speaker kinda looks like the typical boombox speaker in this photo. Its actually a good bit more concave than the picture shows, and is pretty heavy built. If it had rubber surrounds, instead of foam, It would be one of the best drivers its size that I've worked with.
