I've had luck with 2 drivers (5" frame) in a stacked vert arry.
There was the 7th veil stack of four 2" bandors.

Floric has run an 8 unit array using the fr35 peerless driver (84mm frame) with a little boost.

I use a little passive boost for the hights 15u // 1,2R....... Dynamics, soundstage, tonality is great. But the little beasts quite difficult if you have to find the right position."

There's the Twentyfive array, using 25 (surprise!) Visaton FRS-8M units in a straight array. With a ruddy great filter slapped on it (draw your own conclusions). "I'll have some "ear test results" this week although they sounded fantastic in my shop with a very cheap receiver. I won't be able to get some graphs done until my friend with his REW gets his microphone and new board. What an awesome driver!"

That long xmax on the a3 justifies the cost (compared to other small xmax drivers) assuming the driver sounds nice. The distortion curve looks nice until it goes past 3mm Xmax.
I was thinking of 6 of the 2"x3" tang band for $150 (the a3 and tb have area = 32cm2) but 1 of the a3 drivers can more similar air (Sd x Xmax) and probably sound better (distortion wise).
Then again, that a3 has way more output that similar priced jordan or bandor units.
I don't want to hear a 4 A3 driver array because I'm sure I'd love the way it sounds then be unhappy untill I make some !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I assume using cheaper drivers and crossing them 24db @ 200hz would get me similar results. I require multiple 15's moving the air in a room, sounds more real to me.

I think a mini line array (4) using the dayton 8 ohm rs-100s or now even the mark audio chr70s or even the alpair 6 square frames. Would there be any issues in trying a mini line array in an Open Baffle, besides maybe the crossover point tot he sub due to the baffle roll off?
I've looked close at the rs-100, it did best in a car audio test beating out the tg9, tc9, l3 and peerless 830986.

DAYTON RS100
The Dayton RS100 has the great low-end (down to 125 at moderate volumes, but 160 at 24DB is best) and great detail, This thing plays loud and say clean doing it and handles power very well. But because of the low-end it can make the midrange sound a little fat and make thing run together a little, but it was easy to fix (EQ out or back in the separation). I loved strings instruments on this driver. I would keep it around 5-6khz on the top-end, above that you well need some very good EQing skills, but it is just a great all around driver and the most dynamic in the group.

Ob's can be tricky.
But if the feq is near the crossover point, it should work.
But these little drivers can easily bottom out run wide open on an open baffle. So box them for excursion protection, or run a crossover.
4 of the tc9's (flat array) or even 9 in a convex array should be fun and won't break the bank either........................
